Regarded by many critics as Charles's best studio album, Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music is generally considered to be a landmark recording in American music.
The album's integration of soul and country bent racial barriers at the height of the civil rights struggle.
In the process of recording the album, Charles became one of the first Black musicians to exercise complete artistic control over his own recording career.
Covering a period from 1939 to the early '60s, the 12 tracks here touch on old-time fare (Floyd Tillman's "It Makes No Difference to Me Now"), honky-tonk (three Hank Williams songs), and early country-politan (Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You").
Along with a Top Ten go at Eddy Arnold's "You Don't Know Me," the Gibson cover helped the album remain at the top of the pop charts for nearly three months and brought Charles international fame. Above a mix of swinging big band charts by Gerald Wilson and strings and choir backdrops from Marty Paich, Charles' intones the sleepy-blue nuances of country crooners while still giving the songs a needed kick with his gospel outbursts. No pedal steel or fiddles here, just a fine store of inimitable interpretations.
In 2003, the album was ranked number 104 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

LABELS: EXCELLENT
Clean, bright and unmarked labels with just light spindle rash
VINYL Visual: VERY GOOD/VERY GOOD++
The surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen but there are some scuff marks (especially on Side One) - these have no significant impact
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT
My play-check at loud volume revealed no major audio issues of note - no scratches, just a little surface noise evident between the tracks and the occasional isolated 'click' (both very minor and non-intrusive) but no signs of groove-wear or distortion.
Plays beautifully throughout and sounds great - crystal clear, deep, rich and warm *STEREOPHONIC* audio reproduction
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT
The front laminated sleeve has a deep glossy sheen and is unmarked.
The edges are spine show no real wear to speak of and are crisp and square - all spine text is clear and bold.
The back is remarkably clean and white with a little damage to the top flipback being the only major detracting feature
