JOHN BROMELL 1940-2013
Glory days: John Bromell with Cold Chisel, one of the many successful bands he helped sign.
Australia's rock and pop music landscape could potentially have been a desert without John Bromell. He had a unique knack for spotting talent, shopping it around, supporting it through lean times and pushing it over the line.
Among those whose signings he presided over are Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Richard Clapton, Blackfeather, John Swan, Taman Shud, Karvis Jute, Flying Circus, Autumn, the Radiators, Iva Davies and Mark Holden. He was also considered one of the catalysts in the rise of country music in Australia, with Lee Kernaghan, Gina Jeffreys and Troy Cassar-Daley among the signings he engineered.
Bromell introduced bands to record companies, found managers for bands so record companies would sign them and once put up his house as a bond so Midnight Oil could take their instruments to New Zealand. He leveraged artists out of bad contracts, took in artists waiting for their big break and kept the wolf from many doors.
Over the years, he provided advice and vision as a board member of APRA, AMCOS and Ausmusic and was a popular speaker at music fund-raisers and education seminars.
John William Bromell was born in Melbourne on May 15, 1940 and grew up in Moonee Ponds. In 1962, he married Jan Fowler. He first played drums with the Impalas, a successful band that changed its name to Gigsaw and backed people like Johnny Chester on a number of charting tunes. In 1963 he left Gigsaw to join the Cicadas, a then well-known Sydney band. The Cicadas flew to England. Renamed the Gibsons, the band enjoyed British chart success with It's All in the Magic Book and Bromell spent the next few years in Britain playing rock venues.
