VINYL :  Very Good Plus (VG+): Above average but shows signs of wear. Several light scratches but nothing too serious. Slight surface noise & occasional pops & clicks. Pressed deep on heavy, thick, inflexible vinyl LP is still very black & shiny. Sounds great in Mono.

COVER : Near Mint Minus (NM-): Almost like-new. Very little ring wear. Lamination on front is intact. Seams are intact & sharp. Spine is intact, sharp & legible. Very slight yellowing on back cover. Opening edge is sharp. Titles are not shown anywhere. Amazing shape overall.

INNER SLEEVE: Thick white paper replaced with audiophile sleeve.

LABELS : Very sharp, no spindle marks. Seldom-seen purple & silver JUDD labels.
 Slight wear near center hole on Side Two (see scan).

BEAR SAYS: TRAVELIN' WITH RAY books out at $700 for a Near Mint copy (which means the LP is very scarce.) This is Ray Smith's first album, long out of print on vinyl, a first issue Mono copy released on the tiny Judd label in 1960. The record has visible wear, but is pressed deep & plays through. The cover is extremely well-preserved. The track list includes his first hit "Rockin' Little Angel" & other gems like "Rebound", "Makes Me Feel Good", "Little Miss Blue" & "That's All Right". Here is a true relic from Rock's early days !!

A SIMPLE VINYL GRADING SYSTEM :

Mint: Still Sealed/Unplayed/Unopened/The Holy Grail
Mint minus (M-): New and Possibly Unplayed ; a rarely used grade.
Near Mint (NM): Like-new, with little or no visible wear; very collectible.
Near Mint minus (NM-): almost like-new, perhaps very slight signs of age, play or wear that are strictly cosmetic.
Excellent (EX) Very Good double-plus (VG++): Way above average, very nice, no serious flaws; played, not abused.
Very Good plus (VG+): An above average used LP; a few visible surface marks or paper scuffs; slight surface noise.
Very Good (VG) : An average used LP, far from perfect; a few light scratches. Some noise; plays through, no skips.
Very Good minus (VG-) : Reveals lots of wear/noise when viewed or spun but is not actually defective or warped.


LP Cover grading is a much less exact, more subjective science. Generally, the truly collectible grades range from Mint to Excellent (VG++) depending on general wear. Main cover flaws such as split seams or spine splits, ring wear, cut or bent corners, hole punches, writing, water damage etc. should always be mentioned in a proper auction listing. Records are professionally sight-graded, sometimes play-graded. Keep in mind, used LPs are very rarely found in actual "Mint" condition. Proper record grading involves knowledge & honesty, not wishful thinking.
