SHORTy ROGERS * The Wizard of Oz  *   ?Die meisten Titel dieser LP hat Shorty Rogers dem Musical "The Wizard Of Oz" entnommen, das amerikanische Publikum der 50iger Jahre kannte alle vom Broadway und aus den Filmen. Diese aber als Jazz-Improvisations-Grundlage zu entdecken und zu arrangieren, war eine echte Herausforderung. Um das bestmögliche Ergebnis zu erzielen, dazu musste ein Mann von der Klasse wie Shorty Rogers die Notenblätter in die Finger bekommen und den Dirigierstab in die Hand nehmen.
Die sechs Musicaltitel auf Seite A – alle durch Judy Garland gesungen, gespielt, geradezu 'verkörpert' und Kassenschlager geworden - bieten durch die Einfachheit, Eingängigkeit und Fröhlichkeit die Basis für die ausgefeilten Improvisationen aller Solisten. Hervorheben muss man besonders "Ding Dong!" und "Over The Rainbow", mit dem wunderbaren Piano-Miniatur-Konzert von Pete Jolly.
Die fünf Titel von Seite B sind den Jazzfans seit Jahren vertraut, weil Harold Arlen’s Songs zum American Songbook-Repertoire gehören. Der "Blues In The Night" ist etwas zu wenig schwarz – logisch: er kommt ja von weißen Westcoast-Musikern und nicht aus dem tiefen, schwarzen Harlem, aber ansonsten haben alle Themen den berühmten lässigen Drive, wie ihn das Publikum unter der warmen kalifornischen Sonne der 50- und 60iger Jahre so liebte.
Dass die Super-Musik von Shorty Rogers und seinen Giganten swingt, wird auf beiden Seiten der LP definitiv bewiesen. Aber warum sollte Musik nicht auch fröhlich sein und Spaß machen können?

Achtung: Im Gegensatz zu der Bezeichnung 'Living Stereo' auf dem Cover ist diese Veröffentlichung NICHT Stereo sondern Mono!

Produktion: Dick Peirce   ?Shorty Rogers took the majority of numbers on this LP from the musical "The Wizard Of Oz", which Americans in the Fifties knew from Broadway and from the cinema. But to detect basic jazz improvisations within them and arrange these was a real challenge. To achieve the best possible result, it needed a man as brilliant as Shorty Rogers to tackle the score with a baton in his hand.
The six musical titles on Side A – all of which Judy Garland sang, performed, and virtually embodied and which, of course, were all smash hits – offer a wonderful opportunity for elaborate improvisations by all soloists thanks to their simplicity, catchiness and lightheartedness. Worth special mention are "Ding Dong!" and "Over The Rainbow", with the delightful miniature piano concerto by Pete Jolly.
The five numbers on the B Side are all well known to jazz fans, and have been for many years, because Harold Arlen contributed repertoire to the Great American Songbook. "Blues In The Night" is not quite 'black' enough – but that’s only logical since they were white West-Coast musicians, and not from Harlem. But otherwise all the numbers have that famed cool drive, which audiences under the warm Californian sun so loved in the Fifties and Sixties.
Both sides of this LP are proof positive that Shorty Rogers and His Giants perform music that swings. And who’s to say that such music shouldn’t be jolly and fun?

Attention: Opposite to the slogan 'Living Stereo' on the sleeve, this release is NOT Stereo but Mono!
