Description

This mega-rare  disc is an Unissued Test Pressing of a Red Nichols Trio recorded by John Steiner in Chicago in June 1944. Besides Red on cornet there is Jack Gardner on piano and Vic Engle at the drums. The master numbers inscribed in the dead wax are 63044-1B and 63044-5B. The disc was pressed by the Bishop Presses of Pasadena, CA. The words "A Bishop Pressing" are underneath the side A label. There are no details on either label. The tunes are Cheerful Little Earful and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. There are actually 2 versions of Cheerful Little Earful on the first side. First, there is a medium tempo rendition with Red doing the chorus, verse and final chorus. There are no other solos. Next there is some very brief instruction presumably by Steiner. Then comes a second rendition done at a slower tempo with solos by Gardner and Red as well as a 4 bar drum tag. Tunes: Cheerful Little Earful / Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

Condition: This is a tough one to grade because the wear is uneven. For side A, there is some visible groove wear during the first rendition of Cheerful Little Earful which is 1 minute in length.  The music is undistorted and the disc is cleaner for the remainder. So I grade side A as VG / E. Side B grades VG visually again due to uneven groove wear but  plays VG+ overall with music being prominent over the surface noise.  If you wish to contact me then I will send you a sound snipet of each side.
