R.E.M. : Reveal A1/B1 1st Press (Europe) 2001

This very collectable first pressing plays with superb audio and no obvious intrusion.  There are no clicks or pops and the only 'background' is some light background static but it is kept to a minimum and yes is very quiet.  It certainly does not detract from the overall listen and the clarity remains very impressive.  A full honest grading is given below and as you will see the vast majority plays with stunning quality.  The vinyl is visually in great order and you can tell it has only been lightly played based on the audio and the fact there is barely any spindle wear.

The cover is in fantastic shape with only one corner crease top left and the lyric insert is 'as new'.

This album is known as a European release but on the back of the cover it does say Made In Germany.

Visual description

The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen with no obvious marks or scratches.  Under a strong light I can only see a small number of faint hairlines and an even smaller number of minor 'specks' - only visible when you hold the vinyl at a certain angle.  The labels are immaculate with barely any spindle wear.

Play grading

'The Lifting' is close to perfect with only a minimal amount of mega light static in a handful of sections and I do mean minimal!  It is so quiet and totally non-intrusive and apart from that I only heard one light tick.  I will grade as Near Mint although I am sure many would grade higher.

The intro on 'I've Been High' again has only the lightest of background static and Stipe's opening vocal the same.  From then on it plays with great quality and there are no ticks, clicks or pops and barely any static.  Again I will say Near Mint and is a superb listen for sure.

'All The Way To Reno...' plays with stunning clarity from the word go.  This classic track could not play with any greater precision and Mint- is 100% deserved.

The acoustic intro on 'She Just Wants To Be' has only the bare minimum of light static and then plays with great quality for the remainder.  There is no real 'background' apart from a little static right at the end.  The clarity and definition of sound is very impressive.  An Ex+ intro and end section and Mint- in between :-)

'Disappear' plays with outstanding audio and no interference.  Again you really cannot fault the clarity of sound.  Mint-

'Saturn Return' has some light static on the quiet intro and as Stipe's vocal comes in the playback is superb.  It continues to play with wonderful clarity - perhaps a hint of barely audible static but again there are no ticks, clicks or pops.  Another Ex+ intro and at least Near Mint from then on.

'Beat A Drum' has one faint tick a few seconds and then plays with great clarity and no interference.  The depth and warmth of the sound is so strong especially when you turn it up loud!  I picked up only 3/4 mega light ticks so will grade as Near Mint accordingly.

Next up is the classic 'Imitation Of Life' and it plays with sensational audio from start to finish with no intrusion.  Tremendous depth and resonance here also.  A superb Mint- track in every way.

'Summer Turns To High' plays with exceptional clarity and again there are no clicks or pops getting in the way of the audio.  A couple of light ticks that is all and Mint- is very much deserved.

'Chorus And The Ring' plays so clearly with only a very minimal touch of barely audible static every now and then.  So quiet and perhaps hardly worth a mention but I prefer to be 100% with my gradings.  Near Mint

'I'll Take The Rain' is fantastic!  It plays with high end audio and I detected only a hint of barely audible static for a few intermittent seconds but again so quiet and not intrusive in any way.  A couple of very light ticks also.  I will say Near Mint but again the majority is stronger than that.  The sonic quality here is so impressive, the audio has a genuine depth and warmth to it.  A great track and a great listen!

'Beachball' ends this fine album with near perfect clarity.  There is barely any static and Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

In summary this album plays with very impressive clarity and there are no clicks or pops to be heard.  There is only very minimal light static here and there but it is very quiet and not intrusive in any way as stated.  The vast majority of this great album plays with stunning sonic quality and there are number of highlights, too numerous to mention!

The Cover & Lyric Insert

The cover has only one small area of wear - a little creasing in the top left corner.  Apart from that it remains in superb condition with no rubbing on the edges or spine and barely any wear on the other corners.  The opening edge has no handling wear and the front cover is so clean with just one tiny mark next to the spine (not easy to find!) and a couple of very faint edge creases.  The back cover is in lovely condition and both sides show only very light ringwear.  A superb example overall.

The lyric insert is in perfect shape with no wear at all.

The record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
