Description

“Reckoning,” R.E.M.’s second studio album, was released on April 9, 1984, by I.R.S. Records. Known alternatively as “File Under Water,” this alternative rock album was recorded over 16 days in late 1983 and early 1984 in Charlotte, North Carolina, featuring production by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, who sought to capture the essence of R.E.M.‘s live performances. The album cover, a collaboration between lead singer Michael Stipe and artist Howard Finster, features a two-headed snake. Unique in its presentation, the vinyl LP’s sides were labeled “L” and “R” instead of the traditional “side one” and “side two.” Upon its release, “Reckoning” quickly climbed to number one on college radio airplay charts in the U.S., peaking at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and achieving gold certification in 1991
