Very unusual, possibly unique item! The vinyl, which is in nice clean condition, is the first UK pressing – catalogue number ILPS 9114, matrix numbers ILPS 9114 A1 and ILPS 91114 B1 respectively (I’ve no idea why the matrix on Side Two adds an extra 1 to the catalogue number!).
The cover, though, is completely different to the issued version (a miniature of the released front cover is stuck onto the back cover – see scan). I've owned this since the 1970s, but I have no idea of the story behind it - if it's a proof sleeve or mock-up of what was briefly considered as an official sleeve design, whether someone didn't like the official sleeve and just decided to come up with their own alternative, homemade design, or whether it was considered as the cover for a possible overseas issue. The oddest thing about it is probably that the front and back covers both show a different catalogue number (12A 47 Renaissance), although the back sleeve also mentions the official Island catalogue number ILPS 9114). Anyway, 44 years later, I don’t suppose anyone’s going to get too far in discovering the true story behind it – but still, this is an interesting item, and this alternative cover is probably more striking that the official one!
