James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music".

Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the US Army; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the chitlin' circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by Linda Keith, who in turn interested bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals in becoming his first manager. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the US after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the US; it was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world's highest-paid performer, he head lined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.

Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored over driven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in utilizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."

Hendrix was the recipient of several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1967, readers of Melody Maker voted him the Pop Musician of the Year, and in 1968, Billboard named him the Artist of the Year and Rolling Stone declared him the Performer of the Year. Disc and Music Echo honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, Guitar Player named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked the band's three studio albums, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 greatest albums of all time, and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.
During the late '70s, it became clear to executives at Warner/Reprise and also to the Jimi Hendrix estate (then under the archival control of producer Alan Douglas) that the late guitarist had acquired a whole new generation of fans in the years since his death -- and, equally important, that few members of Hendrix's original audience had forgotten him. Bootleg LPs of live performances were still appearing with frustrating regularity, and the Reprise-generated posthumous compilations Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning had both sold well; what's more, the original catalog, including the compilation Smash Hits, was all in demand; and the double-LP Soundtrack Recordings from the Film Jimi Hendrix, five years after its release, was still a perennial favorite acquisition. And so in 1978, Reprise issued The Essential Jimi Hendrix, a double-LP set that bridged the gap between Smash Hits, which covered the basics of Hendrix's popularity, and the posthumous excavations (and the more outre FM radio favorites from his repertory) that had cropped up in the years since. It was like a dream come true for serious fans and a listener's best opportunity for total immersion, two hours' deep, in the guitarist's history. It was also a very respectful release, highlighted by a reprint of Don Menn's lengthy and astute Guitar Player magazine overview of Hendrix's career, and fans new and old could revel in its content, which made this one of the forerunners of the modern box set. And it sold so well that a single-LP follow-up, The Essential Jimi Hendrix, Vol. 2, appeared from Reprise in 1979, this one covering the few major studio bases left untouched by its predecessor, along with an acknowledgment of Hendrix's legacy of live recordings ("Wild Thing," "The Star Spangled Banner," etc.). As an addendum to the double set, it was fine, if not always quite as essential. The Hendrix catalog has since moved to two subsequent labels, Universal and Sony Music, but the appeal of this set, in content and packaging, remains undiminished. - Bruce Eder

CONDITION Details:

The GATE-FOLD LP jacket is in near mint minus condition! The jacket is tight and clean, with NO seam splits, NO cut out marks and NO discoloration. The corners are solid, with just a bit of shelf wear the seams and corners. The colors on the jacket are clean and sharp - a superb, collector's grade example.

The LPs are in near mint minus overall condition! There are NO serious marks on the vinyl. Perhaps a very light spider mark or two and/or a finger print or two. Comes with the original paper inner sleeves - spider marks may be audible, but that really depends on the sensitivity of your audio gear. These LPs are in superb condition and very collectible, in near mint minus shape. As this is a vintage LP set, don't expect it to sound like a brand new audiophile LP....some extraneous sound is inevitable and should be expected for a vintage LP. The LPs retain much of the original gloss and sheen! There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either. This is a terrific collector's grade example of this LP title.
