RHESUS O – Rhesus O. Replica RPC 026. French release. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued in 1971. This edition issued in 2017. Limited edition pressed on 180g vinyl. Comes in a gatefold cover. MUSICIANS: Jean-Pol Asseline (keyboards), Thierry Blanchard (drums, timbales, percussion), Guy Pedersen (contra bass, electric bass), Serge Lenoir (electric bass), Francis Moze (electric bass, acoustic guitar, xylophone), Alain Monier (organ, percussion), and Alain Hatot (sax, flute).

DESCRIPTION: Formed in 1971 by future Magma keyboardist Jean-Pol Asseline with musicians from the jazz and jazz-rock fields, this unique LP from Rhesus O will probably find a place between Soft Machine albums in your record collection! Rhesus O are also notable for featuring future Magma bassists Francis Moze and Bernard Paganotti. The band were rehearsing in the basement of organist Alain Monier's family basement when they were discovered by CBS, signing a long-term deal. Magma's bassist Francis Moze was recruited, but by the time of the first recordings Lenoir was back and the band had now two electric bassists plus Guy Pedersen, a funk bassist, who joined them on double bass. The recordings took place at Chateau d'Herouville and the debut album came out in September 1971 on Epic (France). Most of the compositions open with a tight structure and a strong melodic quotient (which is where the Canterbury comparisons come from), while featuring loose jazz solo segments in the middle. The longer the track, the more noisy the jazz segments become. The combination worked pretty well, switching from dreamy interplays, powerful solos, ethereal sax lines and sinister Hammond organ waves. Rhesus O sounded a bit like compatriots Ame Son and, of course, Magma—pretty good company—although the jazz component is more pronounced in Rhesus O. The music gets very dense and close to Progressive Rock quite often with full keyboard/piano battles, electroacoustic changes and sax interventions in pieces which also include a more active role for the bass players. Post release, when Rhesus O started recording new pieces, Monier joined the army for his service and the contract with CBS came to an end, resulting the band's dissolution. Keyboardist Jean-Pol Asseline would also meet his destiny with Magma circa 1975, meeting again with Paganotti, and was a regular musician on Jean-Pierre Alarcen's solo albums.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.

$1.50 for each additional double LP set.
