In early 1971, Richard Thompson, feeling that the material he had been writing at the time was not right for Fairport Convention, decided to leave for a solo career. In between sessions and dates supporting former Fairport mates Sandy Denny and Ian Matthews, he entered the studio to record his first record, Henry the Human Fly (1972), which was a more idiosyncratic version of the British traditional, rock & roll mix that he had begun with his old band. During this time, he also contributed to the rock & roll homage, The Bunch (1972), as well as the traditional Morris On (1972), both of which featured various members, past and present, of Fairport Convention and its offshoots. None of these did anything to change the general public's view of Richard Thompson, to the point where Henry the Human Fly gained the notable distinction of being the worst-selling album in the history of Warner Brothers Records. Such was an abysmal commercial failure of the album, that, at one point Thompson joked that he personally knew every person who ever bought the album (and, judging by an elaborate letter found in his letter, probably corresponded with each and every one of them – op.ed). This is truly unfortunate, because the album remains one of the finest – albeit most obscure and atypical – works. Needless to say, good copies of this album remain practically impossible to find.
The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we probably have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.
