Rarity: Scarce in this mode. ‘Quad’ records were specialised and few, especially in the UK had four-channel decoders for these records. So these were made in very small numbers to cater for quad enthusiasts. These records play perfectly fine on standard stereo equipment and some do offer a different mix variation and detail, so some fans and completists of the major albums and bands seek these elusive quad mix albums.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second album by the Yes virtuoso keyboard player, the songs his interpretations of the six wives of Henry VIII put to music and backed by a host of high-quality rock musicians. An album that sold well mainly due to his performance on the television music program ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’. It peaked at No. 7 in the UK album charts and sold steadily in other countries. This American copy mixed in quadraphonic but plays perfectly fine in standard stereo. These albums are mixed differently and offer their own unique sound, so collectable for fans and completists and often preferred to the stereo versions. This a lovely copy and appears hardly played.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the the ‘SQ’ encoded quadraphonic sticker on the front. Printed and made in the United States. Includes the A&M promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very minor and patchy rub traces near the edge folds, any rub traces few and very light. Clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any creasing, the gold and black SQ encoded sticker immaculate.

Cover Back: Overall, very similar again with a little corner tip rubbing and a couple of small burr traces on the left opening edge, little else at all. The graphics very impressive on both sides, and the lack of ring wear always welcome news on such covers.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A little edge burring on the opening with just one one mild surface crease. The graphic clean and fresh with barely any wear again.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat with hardly anything else to fault bar the odd gentle light rub.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with just a hint of thickening on the machine cut front edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The closed front has patchy thickening with a little burring here-and-there. The back storage edges have a couple of mild burrs, little else, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. All edges are unsplit with no repairs.

Spine and Text: Quite a thick spine that is still solid, straight with minimal compression, a gentle hint of right tilt being critical. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The surface hardly rubbed bar one small surface chip, all text intact and present, also nicely centred.

Corners: Light to moderate (bottom right) tip rubs with very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of this rarer American quad version cover that should please many collectors and specialist fans.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined full-colour promotional inner that is clean and fresh with only mild creasing near the corners. A tiny central bottom edge split was repaired by myself to stop it widening in future, it barely even registers. This is a very attractive inner as-seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. A record with very complex groove patterns as hopefully seen on my pictures. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive quadraphonic album plays up to and mostly even beyond it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and light, overall a clean specialist quad pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. The odd sporadic gentle tick or contact trace sound here-and-there to politely remind of what is being played, but few available copies of this far rarer 4-channel pressing will outperform this I feel sure. Any sound variations played on a standard stereo system are subtle, I thought it a little more open and detailed, any opinion on this purely subjective. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
