Brief Info: Ringo Starr’s second album issued fairly quickly after his debut. ‘Sentimental Journey’ sold well and peaked at No 7 in the UK album charts, but this follow-up faired quite badly failing to chart here at all. ‘Beaucoups of Blues’ now included very different material to the previous release. The sentiment of vintage standards was now gone and a more country style was adopted – whether the first album’s material disappointed buyers was a factor to the poor showing for this one is unclear, but this did not achieve the expected sales and is far more elusive to find as an early original. This is a top copy, hardly played with magnificent sound and gorgeous fully laminated cover. For Beatles collectors and Apple completists, this incredibly fresh copy will take some beating.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a fully laminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front, Back & Inside: The laminate on all faces, including the inside, is in fantastic condition and retains genuine freshness. Very shiny and clear with all artwork looking wonderful, just light rim dulling on the back near the very top and bottom. All is fully adhered with no lifting and hardly any creasing, any present are very small and fine and show little. The entrance edge on the front has a real tucked and folded end, thus no end-of-laminate line which makes this one very neat and attractive. Just the odd tiny tip crease but little else, this will take some beating and is sure to please Apple and Ringo fans.

Top Edges: Both straight and neat with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: Unworn and very smooth.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both immaculate: as stated, the front has a real folded edge that has not chipping or scuffs. The back entrance crisp and very sharp and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A super spine too and actually (for a change) retaining ALL laminate with no peeling bar one near minute surface chip. Solid, straight, minimal compression and folded very close to square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. Just the right ones overhang a little. All text is perfect and unworn as seen in close up.

Corners: All crisp and very neat with hardly any rubbing, just the odd fine and small tip crease being a little critical.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this, a more elusive early 1970’s Apple cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors. The plain white unlined inner is almost as made which reitterates to me the record has hardly made the trip out. Clean, fresh with barely any creasing and no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): now around 44-years-old, few of these will be found a great deal better. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with very fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. Not the heaviest pressed record I have ever held, but the sound is superb for all. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces ultra fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Mostly even finer than hairlines, whispy and harmless. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarcer second Ringo Starr album plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean Apple pressing made by EMI. Few copies will match or outperform this top quality pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Personally, I regard this one as his very best, a view shared by many. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
