Brief Info: Ringo Starr’s second album, issued fairly quickly after his debut ‘Sentimental Journey’. That sold well and peaked at No 7 in the UK album charts, but this follow-up fared less well, even failing to chart here at all. ‘Beaucoups of Blues’ now included very different material to the previous release. The sentiment of vintage standards was now gone and a more country style was adopted – whether the first album’s material disappointed buyers was a factor to the poor showing for this one is unclear, but this did not achieve the expected sales and is far more elusive to find as an early original. I regard this highly, a lovely album that deserves far higher praise. This is a top copy, hardly played with magnificent sound and gorgeous fully laminated cover. For Beatles collectors and Apple completists, this incredibly fresh copy will be very hard to find better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being very critical indeed. A fully laminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front, Back & Inside: The laminate on all faces, including the inside, is in fantastic condition and retains genuine freshness. Very shiny and clear with all artwork looking wonderful with barely even a trace of dulling, even under light. Adhesion is almost total with any lift traces minuscule. The front is close to perfect with any blemishes tiny. A light laminate crease on the back near the top right corner, also a tiny crease on the lower left corner tip. A press mark of the catalogue number, probably from the retailer years ago near the top right. Very light chipping near the bottom edge where the laminate ends, this seldom avoided totally, here almost as small and light as it gets. All very minor issues indeed, little detracts from what overall is a lovely looking cover. The inside is immaculate, and opens to a fresh crackle as the laminate creaks with tightness. Indeed I could no open this one fully, thus my upright picture. The laminate totally unbroken on the central hinge which is very unusual on a sleeve this considerable age.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush, flat and ultra smooth unworn.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with any thickening to the inner card panel gentle and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both little short of immaculate, crisp and sharp. The record enters on the back, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: This spine is always vulnerable to cracking and laminate loss due to the raised inside hinge style – just like the standard ‘Sgt Pepper’ album. This has shed some near the top, but the rest remains fully intact. These, almost immediately form a central ridge from opening, causing the test to sink a little – all natural and rarely avoided totally. This has happened to the catalogue number, but all other is mild and very easy to read as seen. Solid, straight, with little real compression and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. A difficult spine in overall very fine condition.

Corners: All crisp and very neat with minimal rubbing, just the very small tip crease on the lower back left as stated. All others with excellent shape and no dings.

Cover Summary: A very attractive all-round example of this, a more elusive early 1970’s Apple cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner remains clean and still quite fresh. Some creasing near one lower corner and natural rim impression, all edges have no splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a truly superb visual copy that appears hardly even played. Very clean with fresh labels and playing surfaces that retain excellent shine with any blemishes minuscule. Solidly pressed and offering impressive clean sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarcer second Ringo Starr album plays up to its high visual grading with little to fault at all. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal, few and faint, few copies will outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Personally, I regard this one as his finest albums. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
