"In the case of Rita Streich, the gifted coloratura soprano born in 1920, her abilities were at the zenith when she recorded "cradle songs and folk songs" for Deutsche Grammophon in 1962, in the hall of Munich University, and two years later in the Antonius Hall in Regensburg. Four years earlier she had paused on her regular travels between Berlin, Munich, Milan and Vienna to record concert arias by Mozart for DG, with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Charles Mackerras (later Sir Charles), and those demand the best from any singer. She was in demand all over the world to sing the Queen of the Night, Zerlina, Ännchen in Freischütz and not least Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann, and ten more years were to pass before she moved on to a career in teaching, at the Folkwang School in Essen and the Academy of Music in Vienna."
