The benefit of historic issues was to remind us of the style and performing tradition of a bygone age.  We have gained much over the years in the subtlety and growing sophistication of Wolf interpretation, but we have also lost something. What Max Loppert has described as the "interventionist" approach has deprived us of the natural, instinctive style, based on legato and firm tone, as displayed by such singers as Janssen, Kipnis, Rethberg and Husch in this reissue. Another writer has even suggested that Wolf`s songs are so detailed in themselves that they need only the kind of effortless, straightforward singing they receive here. That may be going too far, and in any case those artists mentioned, and others such as Erb, Lemnitz, Roswaenge (in his unforgettable Feuerreiter), McCormack (in his elevated if controversial Ganymed) and Schorr (in his majestic Prometheus) are all quite aware of the significance of words and tone colouring. No, either as an exercise in nostalgia or as an unforgettable experience in its own right, this set is indispensable for any Lieder-lover.

Visual Condition

The records are in Near mint condition there are no stylus scratches or scuffs.  The labels are bright and clean with no stickers or writing or spindle marks. The records have not been cleaned with any mechanical or chemical cleaners.  I only use an anti- static cloth prior to checking their condition visually under halogen lights or bright sunshine.  Please remember that this is a 30 year old record set.

The images I've provided are of the actual item you are bidding on - these are not stock images or images I've taken from other sites.

Viewed under 4 x 50 w Halogen lights or in direct sunlight this clearly shows any imperfections, any visual faults are noted and described, such as scratches, scuffs or spindle marks.

Though due to the very nature of vinyl there is always the inherent tick which is due sometimes to imperfection in the vinyl or debris in the track which a deep clean should remove. Though all records and the record decks/systems they are played on are all different, the stylus, pick up, amplifier and speakers all play a part in the perceived sound that we hear. If your requirements are for a clinical digital reproduced sound, please buy the CD not this vinyl record!

But if you are dissatisfied with the record for any reason I offer a full no quibble refund if you will return the record with its original packaging, at your own expense via a trackable method within fourteen days of receipt. PLEASE CONTACT ME PRIOR TO RETURNING ANY ITEM via ebay ask the seller a question.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THESE ARE LONG PLAYING RECORDS THEY ARE NOT CDS

Grading Score

Information is provided first for the record and then for the sleeve

Record – Sleeve

92            92

95 Mint

(95 is the highest figure given as no records are perfect, not even new and sealed ones)

85-94 Near Mint

Almost flawless; At 85 only the lightest scuff marks to the record and only slight wear to the cover.  Above 86 and up to 94, there should be fewer to no marks on the playing surface of the record or wear to the cover.

75-84 Excellent

Below 84, down to 80, there will be progressively more marking, but this will only be very light and superficial. The cover may have light ring wear, small edge creasing and or discolouration.   A few more surface marks will be seen at 75-79, obvious ring wear, creasing to cover, slight tears, some laminate lift.  Remains of price labels or sticky tape evident to the cover.

65-74 Very Good

I do not list, unless it is a much sought item. There will be more obvious marks to the record including heavier scuffs and / or stylus scratches, more obvious creasing, ring wear or laminate lift, worse tears to the cover.

Below 64 Poor

I do not list.
