Unique Cover - w/Paste-ons, front and gatefold, by BASHO
Bought directly from Robbie Basho in 1970's
1C / 1D PRESS
VINYL is VG+
Clean and glossy vinyl with some light scuffs and non-feelable hairlines, viewed under hard bright light. LP plays well with some minor background noise , mostly at beginning of sides. No clicks, pops or skips. Labels are immaculate both sides.
.
COVER is VG+
Hard to grade a cover like this... Gatefold cover is clean inside and out with a touch of very light wear. Basho-added paste-on cover art sheet is overall very bright and clean with a few small, light spots of aging, (seems to be from adhesive beneath showing through); interior gatefold paste-on decoration of Meher Baba figure is still pristine. Tiny promo drill hole, u.l. corner. Seams and spine completely intact with no splits.

This LP was purchased, along with another (different Basho hand-done cover variation) copy,
and the ZARTHUS album that I also listed this week, at a remarkable Robbie Basho gig.
Robbie was performing at the renowned CLUB ZAYANTE in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the mid 1970's and sold a few of his LPs at intermission; ALL of the handful of Venus and Cancer? LPs he had there were re-done in one way or another, mostly with paste-over b&w zeroxed artwork by Robbie and some small painted or pasted-on image inside the gatefold - no two were alike! He had at some point become very uncomfortable with the standard issue Nude Women cover art and disassociated himself from it by making his own cover art for those he sold himself during this period. Every now and then one of these surfaces; one can be found historically listed on Popsike and besides the 2 that I have listed, I've seen a couple of others appear at various used Record stores, here in No. California.
This one for sale here was the extra copy I picked up at his concert, for airplay at the public radio station KAZU-FM that I was part of. I already sold the other (possibly a much nicer one) yesterday that Robbie had actually done some hand-painting on. It sold within 1 day at nearly twice the price I am asking for this last one. The one here is still quite cool, being Basho's own handiwork - and I love that inner paste-on picture of Meher Baba, it is of a thick 'card' weight and firmly, smoothly affixed. *this inner gatefold paste-on is the full-figure Baba - the picture of just his head (to the left of the paste-on figure) is on all copies, being printed in the normal artwork.
There was special irony in (my first experience in seeing these) Robbie having the "covered over" nude covers at CLUB ZAYANTE, which was openly 'clothing optional' - and right out the back door, behind the stage he played from, were a number of nude folks sunning themselves on the deck and swimming in the pool.
If you are looking for the standard nude women cover art, you'll have to keep searching; but if you want something unique, created by the hand of the artist, this is a very cool piece indeed.
Disc inside of an anti-static poly inner sleeve.
Album kept in a protective mylar, 'flap-seal' outer-sleeve.
