Roberto y su Nuevo Montuno's 1970 debut announced a young band fully formed and brimming with ideas, led by the then 22-year-old Roberto Berrios. Split across two recording sessions with engineer Pedro "Pedrito" Henriquez, El Nuevo Montuno Llego balances fiery originals and deftly reimagined covers. Tony Cintron's title track declares the band's arrival, while Quique Davila's 'Triste Arrabal' shows off a more melancholic side. Hits like the Santeria-infused 'Llame a Chango' and the irresistible guaguanco 'Me Queda Un Guaguanco' highlight the band's rhythmic wildness and vocal flair. This remastered vinyl edition should underline its status as a cornerstone of Puerto Rican salsa.
