ABOUT The Rock City Angels :

Article below is taken from the Gibson guitar forums ...
http://forums.gibson.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=4503
Johnny Depp, late-night threatening phone calls, perhaps even an attempted murder. Sounds like a Hollywood thriller,
but in fact these are the alleged ingredients in the story of Rock City Angels. Formed in the early ’80s, and signed
to New Renaissance Records in 1985, the five-piece band seemed destined for greatness. Forging a style that fused blues,
glam, punk, and hard rock (lead singer Bobby Durango once described the group as “Muddy Waters meets the Sex Pistols”),
the band made one brilliant album and then dropped off the public radar.

Theirs is a convoluted tale, but in brief it goes as follows: After relocating to Los Angeles the same year they signed
to New Renaissance, the band quickly established a massive West Coast following, comprised in large measure of early
Guns N’ Roses fans who had seen their beloved Gunners go on to bigger things. During this period, Johnny Depp was a
charismatic member of the band, boasting a distinctive, riff-oriented guitar style that figured prominently in the
group's songwriting. A debut album was recorded, and singles were shipped to local radio stations.

It’s here that the story takes some odd twists. Purportedly, two weeks before the debut was to be released,
New Renaissance executive Ann Boleyn began receiving anonymous phone calls warning her to “stay clear of Rock City Angels.”
Boleyn also maintains that, during this same period, someone tried to force her off the road late one night as she was
cruising along Mulholland Drive. Concurrently, rumors began swirling that Geffen Records was interested in the band, allegedly
because the group constituted direct competition to Guns N’ Roses. As it turned out, the rumor had some basis in fact.
Before the debut album hit record stores, Geffen bought out Rock City Angels’ contract, brokering a deal that gave the band
a 6.2 million dollar advance against future sales.

On the very same day the Geffen deal went down, Depp was offered his own deal to star in the TV show, 21 Jump Street.
Depp remained loyal to Rock City Angels, but in the end he couldn't sustain the dual-career track. Meanwhile, rather
than release the New Renaissance album, Geffen shuttled the band off to Memphis to work on new material with legendary
producer Jim Dickinson. Dickinson brought some swampy R&B components to Rock City Angels' blues-glam style, but after
hearing the mixes Geffen insisted the album be re-made. Delays ensued, as the songs were re-mixed and polished in a way
presumed to be more palatable for public consumption.

ABOUT DEPP IN THE BAND:

(taken from an interview with a Spanish magazine)

Alvaro = When did Johnny Depp join the band?

Bobby = Well Johnny Depp...he was in a rival band in South Florida at the time called the Kids...and they were a little bit more new wave
than we were...they weren't a hard core punk rock band like we were...he ahh...him and I had kind of a competition going...we were always
after the same women...and we had a certain little rivalry going at that time. But we were still friends and... then years later...we met
in Los Angeles after the band had moved to LA and he was acting but he wasn't in a band. He had just finished doing "Nightmare on Elm Street"
and he was interested in playing again...well one thing led to another and he started playing in the band and he was an incredible rythmn
guitar player...he's a good songwriter as well. People have no idea...he's got many hidden talents...of course he's a great actor...but he
...I loved playing with him...we probably would have stayed playing with us forever if he hadn't had a falling out with the guitar player
(Mike Barnett) at the time...

Jukes  = he had 21 Jumpstreet coming up too....didn't he?

Bobby = Yeah ahh...

Jukes = and he was going to the Phillipines to shoot "Platoon"

Bobby = he was still...you know...he was still interested in playing with the band even after he got the 21 Jump Street gig...

Jukes = he played with us after that...remember (July 4, 1986 @ Janis Garza's club...Nick Cage was there too)

Bobby = yes...has a matter of fact...the night that we were signed by Geffen records (we were opening for Janes Addiction at the Scream Club.
.. Feb. 14, 1986) he actually was playing with the band at that time... but nobody know who he was...so I mean it was no big deal! Now of
course everyone's like...whew Johnny Depp! He's a great guy...I love him to death...I'd love to be able to talk to him again...it's been
years...

Jukes = he's a hell of a guitar player! I mean he used to bend the neck...remember that thing he would do bending the neck?

Bobby = He had an incredible style!

Jukes = he wasn't just some kid that knew three chords...
Check out the song "Mary" which Johnny Co Wrote while in the band !!!

Johnny Depp & the Rock City Angels has written by former band manager Phil Lorito:

http://www.loritomgt.com/index.html

In a May, 2004 interview with "Esquire" magazine Johnny Depp made mention of his experiences with Rock City Angels in the 1980's.
Prior to my involvement with the band, Johnny Depp had joined the group while they were performing throughout Florida in the early 1980's.
The band performed under the names "Abusers" and "Delta Rebels." In 1983 the group traveled cross-country to Los Angeles playing pick up
gigs along the way whenever they were lucky to get work. I heard some really great stories about car and truck breakdowns, shoplifting
food, sleeping in some of the most "forgettable places" and, of course, the most interesting stories are about the women they met along
the way. One true story had Johnny living in Nicolas Cage's old apartment near Hollywood Blvd. At that time he was so broke that he
took the Mexican change in Cage's drawers down to the check-cashing joint on the corner of Hollywood & Whitely so he could buy a hot dog.
It was in the latter part of the 1980's that I came to hear a cassette of the band and enthusiastically pursued the opportunity to manage
them. This quest led me to the group in Memphis, Tennessee. After meeting with the band twice, making two separate trips from New York
to Memphis, the group signed a five-year management contract with me. It was during this timeframe that the band changed its name to
Rock City Angels and signed a recording contract with Geffen Records. Our A&R representative at Geffen Records who worked with me in
putting it all together was Tom Zutaut. At this time Johnny Depp left the band, traveled to Canada and did the pilot for "21 Jump Street." It was left to Tom Zutaut and me to find a replacement for Johnny. Tom suggested I consider Mike Barnes from North Carolina. Without going into the details of how it was accomplished, Mike Barnes did become the new guitar player.

With the proliferation of unofficial "Rock City Angels" web sites, I feel it is important to debunk and dispel all the absurdly ridiculous
rumors, falsehoods and speculation surrounding the reasons for Johnny's departure from Rock City Angels. I have not seen one single website
that has any semblance of truth concerning the so-called "mystery" of Johnny Depp and Rock City Angels. I find all the ridiculous
fabrications humorous. I also don't feel it is proper or ethical for me to discuss the relevant personal business of artists I have
represented or any of the business that transpired between those artists and record companies, agencies, promoters, lawyers, accountants
or, for that matter, any entertainment business entity. What I will say after reading the Internet "garbage' on the subject is this:
throughout the entire transition process from Johnny Depp to Mike Barnes, everyone, including Johnny, the band members, attorneys,
David Geffen, Tom Zutaut and, I dare say, myself, all conducted business in the most professional manner.

In early May, 1988, nearly eight months after Johnny left the band, Tom Zutaut informed me that everyone at Geffen Records felt so
strongly about the Rock City Angels album that it was impossible to settle on which ten songs to put on the record and that David Geffen
had agreed to have Rock City Angels become the first double debut album in Geffen Records' history. The double album would contain 15
songs representing all the songs recorded between November, 1987 and April, 1988. One of the songs, "Mary," was written by Johnny Depp.
Tom Zutaut requested that I contact Johnny and work out the issues concerning rights to use the song on the album. We had absolutely no
problem working out an agreement. The attorneys completed the paperwork in short order and "Mary" written by Johnny Depp is the third
song on Side A.

 Chuck Eddy and RCA ...

This is the band that Geffen blew off despite the fact that Chuck Eddy ranked Rock City Angel's debut album,
Young Man's Blues #106 in his book "Stairway to HELL" The 500 Best Heavy Metal Albums In The Universe Copyright 1991.
He ranked them above such greats as Led Zepplin' Physical Graffiti (#112), Led Zepplin 2 (#131), Black Sabbath's
Master of Reality (#120),
Van Halen's Women and Children First (#123) & Van Halen 2 (#125), The Who, Who's Next (#129), ZZ Top, Dequello (#130) &
El Loco (#134), etc.

About Johnny's Angels
Johnny's Angels: Depp Fans for Charity started out in April 2007 from a very simple idea: Johnny Depp has a legion of faithful fans
who respect his films AND his personal choices.

so we thought, "Johnny Depp supports Children's Hospice and Palliative Coalition (CHPCC) for years, so why shouldn't his fans do the
same in his honor?"

It stood to reason that some folks would want to help this charity if only they knew how to do it. And so it began ...
but we never dreamed that this little project would grow so much, so fast. We are genuinely honored, amazed and inspired by the
response from people around the world.

We hope this initiative can make a difference in the lives of children at a time when they need help the most. We think it can.
Our mission is to raise funds for Children's Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition (CHPCC) and --more importantly-- to raise awareness
for children's hospice organizations EVERYWHERE around the world.

And don't miss the video clip below of Johnny Depp accepting the Courage to Care award for his work on behalf of Children's Hospice. It's
really very simple, and it really does make a difference.
