Rarity: First issues this little used are quite difficult to find, this was a popular album. Like Bowie albums of the same era, many were purchased by the teenage market and played many times on the most basic of record players.

Brief Info: The third Rod Stewart album, now moving to Mercury Records from sister company Vertigo, both part of Phonogram. Most consider this Stewart’s masterpiece and it justifiably proved popular – the No 1 single ‘Maggie May’ bought his attention to the masses. However, finding clear, little used originals is much harder – just like Bowie and T. Tex albums – many were purchased by the younger market at the time and played to destruction. This copy appears hardly played, pressed quite lightly due to the oil shortage of the time, but with pure quality vinyl so the sound quality is impressive. A beautiful enduring album that fails to age – just the man himself – this skillfully blends pop, rock and blues. This is Rod Stewart at his sublime best with several of the songs more hard rock where his voice really excels and this copy does this legendary set excellent justice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better, these first issue covers were made very thin on matt, smooth card and had different text as detailed further on. A single format printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes the ‘Vertigo’ style SBL boxed PRICE CODE on the back.

NOTES: cover vocal credits are listed as: “Madeline Bell and friends, Vocal abrasives” and Ray Jackson is not explicitly credited on release. The reference is listed as: “The mandolin was played by the mandolin player in Lindisfarne. The name slips my mind”. Also the song ‘Tomorrow is a Long Time’ is incorrect, the song (as per the label) should be “Tomorrow is Such a Long Time”. These details were changed on later covers, this original text is seen on my close-up picture.

Cover Front: These first issue covers are very thin and flimsy, hence few survive in better conditions. This front has little to fault – possible gentle discolouration and minor corner tip rubs – but hardly rubbed or creased with no sticker issues. The delicate card still flat and the artwork still dark and unfaded. Still very impressive with just that faint trace of polite ageing that I actually like on covers of vintage.

Cover Back: A trace of rubbing near the top edge and fine crease on the bottom edge that shows little. The lack of ugly ring wear is a major plus on a cover that seldom avoids it.

Top Edge: Straight with any rubbing or discolouration light.

Bottom Edge: Similar again with a light, gentle rubbing on this delicate storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Thin, but still solid, straight with minimal compression, slight grubbiness to the white, and a tiny chip on the bottom fold. The text is all present and intact, also nicely centred on the narrow depth as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creases are small and light, fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite fragile original 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: marked down for darkening of the seam area adhesive, there is little else to fault. Two neat unworn window circles, the polylining still quite clear and all edges naturally intact. There is a small code in pen to one edge near the top. This has the early date code of 0671 (June 1971) when it was manufactured.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces very few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light – hardly any in fact. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic album plays up to it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
