“SHAKE” b/w “I JUST GOT SOME”
On the ORIGINAL UK 45 on COLUMBIA RECORDS DB 7892 from vintage 1966
One of the ultimate Rod Stewart rare gems, from a day when young Rod The Mod was fixated on the then recently-deceased Sam Cooke. I’m afraid this proved to be a bit unsuccessful sales-wise, and understandably really - as there was only one Sam Cooke, and if you liked him you bought ...his records! Sorry Rod, but there was not much call for a Sam Cooke tribute act in 1966 - even though it is an excellent single. He was taking up the mantle to rival The Small Faces and Steve Marriott, ‘the voice’ of mod culture at this time, and his confidence in his vocal talent was evident here.
What might have improved Rod’s chances of getting a hit, was his Steampacket group that augmented him... one of whom was Brian Auger, he played the keyboards and directed the music on this great single. Steampacket appeared at Richmond Blues And Jazz Festival in 1965, which was a great place to see up-coming bands such as these, or The Yardbirds.
Basically, this was Steampacket’s only issued recording at the time, but since it was indulging Rod’s fascination for Cooke - it was better to make it his as a ‘solo’ release. The flip is an upbeat blues-soul raver with a classically ribald suggestive slant, and Stewart exclaims his boast with panache! Somehow it didn’t quite fit into mainstream pop, nor did it quite appeal enough to the hardcore beat and rhythm and blues fanbase, who preferred things a little less brash!
Even by the time this got released, Rod was moving on to other things - this time with Beryl Marsden, Peter Green (soon of Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac) and Pete Bardens (fresh from Van Morrison’s group ‘Them’). Their single featuring Rod’s vocals was excellent - but proved to be another hopeless flop in sales terms.
Somehow, the World was still not quite ready for Rod Stewart with ‘Shake’.
As Rod’s third solo record, this is an essential milestone in his journey through the early 1960's, towards finding his comfort-zone in the Jeff Beck Group. A powerful record, and a punchy rendition of an R’n B classic, the original, issued nowhere else & EXTREMELY RARE!
Condition is EX, with light lines under bright light, playing WONDERFULLY and without distortion or annoying crackles.
Lables are EX, very respectable and clean - no pen, stickers or scrapes!
