Brief Info: This album was recorded in Berlin on 21 July 1990, to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall eight months earlier. It features a host of star vocalists and backing musicians. Superbly recorded, produced and pressed, this copy sounds magnificent and appears hardly played. This is a promotional copy with two front cover stickers as seen in close-up. It can be argued this live version adds even more atmosphere to the standard studio copy with different voices for the main characters. ‘The Trial’ is outstanding and the explosion of the wall coming down on side four is truly stunning. The addition of Water’s ‘The Tide is Turning’ as a finale is inspired. For fans of this legendary Pink Floyd member and this groundbreaking piece of progressive rock art, this is indispensable. As a footnote, all the artistes dontated their royalties from the sale of this record to The Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT (or close to): An unlaminated gatefold format with two promtional stickers on the front. The outside is varnished with a shiny surface, the inside is matt. Printed and made in Europe with Dutch references. Includes two graphic inners sleeves.

Cover Front: A few mostly light marks seen under light. A little corner tip rubbing and small trace on the bottom of the spine fold. A very light stain near the bottom edge towards the right shows little. Both stickers are clean and possibly unique, clearly never removed or picked at.

Cover Back: The back has little to fault bar the very gentle stain near the bottom again.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside.

Top Edges: Some patchy rubbing, both straight and meet together flush.

Bottom Edges: Minimal rubbing on this pair.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any burring or thickening minimal (just one tiny one on each), both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A light rub on the bottom fold with most of the text present and unworn. The only rub on the last three small digits of the number near the very bottom corner.

Corners: Light to near moderate tip rubs, fine to very fine shape retained

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this 1990 cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Some light wear and relatively minor blemishes, so not for the perfectionists, but many will be more than happy. I would be sure, most copies of this album were sold on CD with only limited availability on vinyl.

The Inner Sleeves: MINT(-): with barely anything to really fault. Graphic unlined thick paper inners with recessed top openings, both are clean, fresh and attractive with no splits, repairs or noteworthy creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+)/(++): an impressive visual pair that are very clean with lovelhy shine and quite solidly pressed. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually super records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challening album. Most will know a highly complex album with passages of volume, quietness and effects. This one is superbly pressed and few copies will outperform this promotional pressing I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been generally carefully handled. Promotional albums often get cover marks or blemishes, but the records are really impressive and sound fantastic. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these scarce records. They will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
