Amid the myriad compilation albums that litter Rolf Harris' discography, The Boy from Bassendean stands proud as one of the few to eschew some of his bigger hits,
in favor of a more thematically arranged collection of songs. That the theme is strictly Australian probably goes without saying, as does the presence of the immortal "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport"." But an ode to Ned Kelly nods towards the country's cultural heritage, while "Six White Boomers" is probably the nearest many of us have ever come to an Australian Christmas song -- the picture of Santa's sleigh being drawn across the midsummer sky by six large elderly kangaroos is certainly a picturesque one. Again, anybody searching for the songs for which Harris is most renowned, "Sun Arise" and "Two Little Boys" among them, should look elsewhere. But for a deeper understanding of his longevity and popularity, The Boy from Bassendean is certainly worth investigating. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide
