Description

The Rolling Stones : Aftermath
This very early unboxed red Decca album on the grooved label is a FINAL UPGRADE ARCHIVE pressing that plays with astounding quality on both sides.  The clarity is second to none and the vast majority is 'as new'.  I have listened to every second and it is without doubt the cleanest example I have heard in many years and the vinyl is visually stunning also!
The cover is also very impressive and remains fully intact with only very minor shelf wear.  The original inner sleeve is also included and has no splits or tears.

Visual grading
This is one of finest examples of red grooved mono vinyl that I have ever seen and has a fantastic jet-black glossy sheen.  S1 in particular is stunning and has only a handful of extremely difficult to find hairlines but I cannot stress enough just how superb it looks!  S2 is almost as good, just a couple of more hairlines but quite honestly many sellers would grade this visually as mint and at first glance looks 'as new' really.  There is not that much spindle wear so the vinyl has definitely not been played a great deal and that is reflected in the amazing audio quality as detailed below.  This album has been so well preserved down the years, incredible condition for 53 years old.
Play grading
What we have here is a stunning start to S1!  With barely any 'background' on the run in grooves the intro on 'Mothers Little Helper' could not play with greater clarity.  In fact the entire track plays with sublime quality and there is no 'background' not even a dust tick!  The sound definition for a 53 year old record is incredible and has no audio deterioration whatsoever.  I am confident in grading this as Mint as it just could not play any better.
'Stupid Girl' is of the same immaculate quality accept for the final 2/3 seconds which has a minimal amount of light static.  I truly believe by the time this was recorded the production was vastly improved, the Stones were being taken seriously!  The depth of the sound is so much stronger and gone is the tinny distortion.
What follows is one of the 'cleanest' versions of 'Lady Jane' that I have heard on a grooved non boxed red label for many a year.  There are a few very ticks on the intro but it takes nothing away from the stunning clarity, each note plays with such precision and there is no other 'background'.  As Jagger begins the playback is 'as new' the clarity is quite simply astounding.  There is no irritating static or crackle and there are certainly no clicks or pops.  This is about as good as it gets and I just can't believe what I am hearing!  A Near Mint version without doubt and only the minor 'background' on the intro and a couple of faint 'ticks' on the fade out stop it from being graded as mint.
'Under My Thumb' is another fine example of a vinyl that has been so well preserved.  From start to finish it plays 'as new' and that is no exaggeration.  Even during the relatively quiet section there is not a dust tick to be heard, the playback is again sensational!  The fade out plays perfectly and this is another Mint track in my educated opinion.  Another point worthy of mention is Wyman's bass on this album.  It is so strong and adds so much to the recording - in fact every musical note has a 'crystal clear' clarity that is second to none.  In a word, stunning.
'Doncha Bother me' once more impresses with a fantastic intro and then continues in the same way.  There is no interference whatsoever and the quiet drum beat fade out has barely any static.
'Goin' Home' of course has such a quiet intro and yet there is next to no static.  I cannot adequately put into words just how good it sounds!  'As new' is perhaps the best way!  Thereafter this unsung classic plays with a clarity that could hardly be improved upon.  There are a few mega quiet dust ticks but they are 100% non-intrusive and I'm only hearing them because I sit so close to the speakers!  There is also a minimal amount of light static at the half way point in the first very quiet section but, I hasten to add, this is very minimal!  In no way does it intrude on the fantastic quality of the listen.  There is no crackle, no clicks or pops and obviously no skips!  The remainder plays with a quality that is so rarely heard and again the clarity is just amazing!  I don't wish to repeat myself but the quiet section near the end is just Mint and the powerful exit then has no distortion at all on the top end.  This may well be the finest example of this track that I have ever heard, a final upgrade version for certain.  Not quite perfect but very close to it!
--------------------------------------------------------------
The quiet piano intro on 'Flight 505' does have a little static but it is by no means loud.  For the opening grooves on a vinyl of this age the playback is still excellent.  As the track 'gets going' the audio is very impressive and there is no obvious static at all.  The remainder plays exceptionally well although, and for the first time, there are a couple of clicks on the final note of the fade out.
'High And Dry' plays with wonderful depth from start to finish and again not one iota of interference.  Once more there is a such a strong bass sound.  A superb rendition.
The classic 'Out Of Time' has an intro that is rarely heard as good as this.  There is no intrusion, just a couple of barely audible dust ticks - stunning!  As the vocal comes there is no decrease in quality and whilst I always go on about clarity it is just so impressive here.  This is such a powerful version and there is no distortion at all.  I cannot emphasise enough how good the audio is here!  The sonic quality is 'high end' and the chorus' play with a definition that is quite simply 'as new' and that applies to the rest of the track.  With a near perfect fade out this is Mint- in anyone's book.
'It's Not Easy' rocks out in sublime fashion with immense power, no distortion and no interference of any kind.
'I Am Waiting' is another track that defies belief!  The super quiet intro is immaculate and is as close to audio perfection that you will find!  I am pleased to say it continues in exactly the same way and I am blown away by the playback here.  The clarity is on another level and the louder chorus section are equally as spectacular.  There is obviously no groove wear, no loss in quality whatsoever since the day it was first released back in '66.  Wow!  This is pure Mint audio in all its glory.
'Take It Or Leave It' and 'Think' both play with great quality although on the latter there is perhaps just a little inner groove distortion on the vocal.  It is minor though and negligible in my opinion.  It this type of distortion is unavoidable with vinyl and there are still no clicks or pops and no static or crackle either.
'What To Do' ends this classic album with great sound quality and with only a little inner groove distortion.  It is a fine ending and again there is no interference aside from a little crackle right at the end of the fade out as you would expect.
In summary this is a final upgrade archive pressing in my humble opinion.  I have never heard such clarity and depth on such an early pressing and the lack of interference is so impressive.  With only a couple of obvious clicks on the fade out of one track the audio is so clear of any intrusive interference.  The quieter sections are sublime and there are so many stand outs - the playback on 'Lady Jane', 'Goin' Home' and 'I Am Waiting' are great examples of this exceptional clarity.  As can be seen the cover is also in lovely condition with very little shelf wear.
The Cover
The laminated 'Clarifoil' cover by 'Robert Stace' is in excellent condition with only very minor shelf wear.  The edges are in superb shape with only a very small area of laminate wear on the top edge, it is barely noticeable.  The thin pinched spine is so clean and has only a couple of tiny crease marks as is common and remains 100% legible.  The corners of the spine have barely any wear and the right hand ones have just a little more and some minor creasing also.  The opening edge has some handling wear although not too much.  The laminated front cover is incredibly clean and has only a small number of faint creases and the back cover has no obvious marking, just a little fading around the outside and a little creasing on the edges.  Rarely there is no writing anywhere!  Overall a very impressive cover for 53 years old!
Inner Sleeve
The original inner sleeve has no splits but there is some creasing and some age related 'spotting' on both sides.
The Labels
The grooved labels have no writing but there is a dark rectangular mark on S1 from where I assume a sticker used to be.  Nothing major and the label info can still be clearly read.  Apart from that they are very clean and as mentioned there is not a great deal of spindle wear.  The KT tax code is stamped on both run out grooves.
