Description
The Rolling Stones : Aftermath 4B / 4A
This mono album plays to a 'high end' standard with only a little interference on S1. The vinyl is in beautiful condition with hardly any marking, just one faint scratch on S1, and has only been lightly played over the last 54 years. S2 is immaculate!
Pressed on the first unboxed grooved red Decca label this stunning copy has two different labels. S1 has the Version 2 label with the KT tax code and S2 has Version 3 with the KT S code.
The cover is in fantastic condition and is the most impressive I have ever seen. It is almost 'as new' and rarely has no marking or creasing. It has so well preserved over the years, has hardly been handled and has obviously stored very safely in a protective sleeve I imagine. The original inner is also in great condition.

Visual grading
This is a very impressive looking vinyl and has not been played very much judging by the clarity and the minimal amount of spindle wear. It retains a stunning glossy sheen and S2 in particular is immaculate. It has no groove wear and no scratches or marks, there are not even any obvious hairlines! Wow! S1 is still in lovely condition but does have a couple of faint 'haze' lines - they are difficult to spot and one radial line but these have no impact on the superb audio. There is also one faint scratch at the end of the side which does cause a little interference as detailed below. Don't get me wrong S1 is still very impressive visually just not quite as good as S2, it is still extremely clean! The run out grooves and labels are in beautiful condition with no marking.
Play grading
As you would expect on a super clean vinyl the lead in grooves have no obvious static and 'Mother's Little Helper' then plays with a depth and clarity than can only be described as Mint- the audio is faultless. There is one tick but this is literally as the music ends.
'Stupid Girl' plays to the same sublime standard and with no interference. With only a couple of minor dust ticks the playback is as close to perfect as is possible. Mint- again.
The classic 'Lady Jane' plays very clearly with only the bare minimum of static in the background. This can be heard once per revolution of the record but only on the first half of the track. Whilst it is audible it is very quiet and not really intrusive and it also worth noting there are no clicks or pops. It is still a very 'clean' version and the remainder plays with immaculate and no 'background' aside from one very light tick near the end. I would say this is Ex for the first half and Near Mint on the second.
'Under My Thumb' has a clarity that is rarely found on these early pressings. There are only a handful of mega light ticks (you could easily miss them!) and the depth of the audio is again so impressive. No clicks or pops and another Near Mint track.
'Doncha Bother Me' plays with faultless precision from start to finish and grades as Mint- it is that good.
'Goin' Home' ends the side with superb audio for the vast majority. There are so many quiet sections and yet the clarity is stunning. From the opening groove it plays beautifully and the bass level is so strong! I am not exaggerating when I say so much of this track plays 'as new'. There are three or four very light static ticks on the seven minute mark but the only obvious intrusion is on the final section where you can hear a light tick once per revolution of the record. This lasts for approximately two minutes but of course can only be heard during the quieter passages. I would not classify it as a click as it is quite gentle but yes it can be heard. It is nonetheless a shame as the rest of the track plays so well!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Flight 505' on S2 has a little static on the quiet intro and from then on plays with excellent audio and only a touch of very minor static in the background here and there. Nothing intrusive and this grades as Ex+ overall.
'High And Dry' has no interference whatsoever and plays with stunning precision and depth. Near Mint for certain.
The classic 'Out Of Time' has barely any static on the intro and then plays with fantastic audio! There is nothing that intrudes on the playback and this version is the strongest I have heard in a long time. This is where a vinyl makes a difference as you just don't get the same level of warmth or depth via any other medium and each note can be heard with stunning precision. There is just a touch of mega quiet static in the quieter sections but is not intrusive in any way. I am happy to grade this as Near Mint. The chorus sections are 100% stunning!
'It's Not Easy' plays with immense quality from start to finish and with no obvious interference. This is a 'louder' track and yet there is no distortion on the top end. A 'high end' Near Mint version for sure and I am sure many would grade higher.
'I Am Waiting' is so impressive for a track with so many quiet sections. The intro plays beautifully with no interference and it continues in the same way with no 'background' of any kind. There are no clicks or pops, just a handful of mega light dust ticks near the end that are barely audible. Another Near Mint without doubt.
'Take It Or Leave It' is almost equal to this but does have one light click just after the half way mark. I will grade as Near Mint- as apart from that it plays with superb precision and clarity.
'Think' plays with exceptional quality and only a little inner groove distortion which is common of course. This is a very 'clean' version with no clicks or pops and another superb fade out.
'What To Do' ends the album with very impressive audio. For a final track there is very little distortion and the playback is so strong and powerful. There are no clicks or pops, no static or crackle and these two final tracks grade as Near Mint I am happy to say.
In summary this a fine example of the is classic album and it's only the final section on 'Goin' Home' that has any obvious interference and even then it's quiet! The clarity and definition of the audio is superb for a vinyl of this age but that is hardly surprising as visually it is just so impressive. As already mentioned the cover is also in fantastic condition, at first glance it looks 'as new'! A stunning 'package'.
The Cover
The 'Robert Stace' cover is quite simply in fantastic condition the likes of which I have never seen before! The edges and thin pinched spine are as good as they were back in '66 and there is no corner wear either. The opening edge is also in pristine condition with no handling wear. The front cover is so clean and has only some 'laminate' lift next to the spine which is common. There are no marks or creases and the back cover is equally as good with no marking/staining which is incredibly rare. It has only a small number of tiny indentations near the top. This is a beautifully preserved cover and I honestly think it would be nigh on impossible to find better! Much like the vinyl it has hardly ever been touched. A stunning example.
Inner Sleeve
The original poly-lined inner is in excellent shape with no side splits or tears and barely any age related fading. There is only a little creasing.
The Labels
The grooved red labels are pristine and have lost none of their original colour. There is no marking or writing and hardly any spindle wear.
