Label/Format: Decca – stereo boxed format in the smaller sized format (Please see my label picture).

Label Conditions: Both in beautiful conditions: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with no wear whatsoever around the hole rims and a very snug tight fit on my Linn spindle. Just a couple of small and fine spindle marks each side. Just compare to the majority of 60s pressings that have been played into the ground on heaven knows what. Although an early 70s repress, Decca records did not diminish their pressing quality, thus they sound nigh-on identical, the vinyl in this case, just slightly lighter than an original. A fabulous example for those who simply want to experience the early Stones sound on the correct analogue format.

Cat Number: SKL 4786.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A good weight and slightly above average for its era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Not too hard to find being honest, Rolling Stones records sold in vast numbers just like The Beatles. But finding early copies – and in vinyl terms, this is still an early one – in barely played conditions is far harder. Again, like The Beatles, these were immensely popular and most were heavily played, purchased to be used and enjoyed. This record is barely even run-in in vinyl terms and that is far more unusual for this and their other titles.

Original Year of Release: 1966. This one would have been pressed in the early part of the 1970s.

Matrix Nos: XZAL-7209-1W / XZAL-7210-4W

Musicians: Mick Jagger – lead vocals, backing vocals, harmonica, percussion; Brian Jones – guitar, slide guitar, marimbas, bells, dulcimer, koto, harmonica, keyboards; Keith Richard – guitar and backing vocals; Charlie Watts – drums, percussion, marimba; Bill Wyman – bass guitar, marimba, organ. Guests: Jack Nitzsche – percussion, piano, organ, harpsichord; Ian Stewart – piano and organ.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their fourth album from 1966 and one of their longest on a single album. This clocks in at around 53 minutes aided by the 11 minute 35 seconds ‘Goin’ Home’ that ends side one. I will concentrate more on it’s condition which I think is far more important.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+. A single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the spine and closed edges. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace and made with typically thin card that was very vulnerable and highly prone to creasing and laminate blistering.

Lamination & Front: A highly attractive front with few traces of wear and real freshness retained. The laminate is very clean and clear with a lovely glossy finish. Only under angled light are any very faint traces of friction rubs or dulling seen. The artwork is the mauve colour and looks magnificent through this almost unfogged laminate. This format cover often sees the laminate lift and blister especially on the spine edge, many indeed were like it from new. More unusually, this is fully adhered with no lifting at all, what a difference this makes to this dark cover. Also this has no large or even moderate creases, more good news and again unusual. Just a couple of light and faint ones away from the edges, most seen are fine hairlines, mostly on the spine. With barely any marks, even surface traces and only the faintest of rim shape under light, a beautiful vintage front that at last does maximum justice to this delicate sleeve.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has aged little with any grubbiness or surface marks few and very faint. Most of any small amount present is seen near the edges. Again few marks and no ringwear and any creasing again very light. The laminate end on the spine edge is clean and very neat too. These black and white non-laminated backs are never easy, but this fine example complements the front very well.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: And again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp and guaranteed untrimmed, with barely any wear and no feathering. The exposed white strip where the laminate ends slightly short of full width is ultra clean with no grime-line formation. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with minimal traces of compression. All text is present and almost perfect under the very solid laminate, just a small few, fine hairline creases only, one of which has clipped the ‘E’ in ‘THE’, the only blemish to any character.

Corners: Slight rub traces and minor tip creases to a couple. All retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this fragile cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors. It will take a very strong example to better this significantly.

The Inner: EX. This record includes a blue Decca polylined inner in super shape with barely any wear, ageing or significant creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and a truly beautiful example. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, and as always, on the finest quality Decca vinyl. A barely played copy, vintage Rolling Stones records rarely get seen quite like this these days. Most a swathe of marks with scruffy labels – chalk and cheese – and there’s the difference. A copy barely even run-in in record terms, how many available copies are there still around with so few plays on the clock? Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. By now the Stones productions were getting more polished and this was just perfect for its vintage and will never be heard cleaner or better than this. Barely any traces of surface sound or crackle and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No piledriver thick, heavy stylus have ruined this one, I doubt if its seen daylight for decades, just the way modern audiophile and discerning collectors want them. Few copies will even match this copy I feel sure, remember this is into it’s fourth decade. Clearly well stored and carefully handled and still a copy of rare beauty. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
