Description
This is a rare mono copy of one of the greatest albums of all time, Beggar's Banquet by The Rolling Stones, on original UK unboxed Decca (LK 4955) from 1968. Mono copies of this late sixties classic are hard to come by and highly coveted, and here is a perfectly presentable and fine playing copy. Beggar's Banquet is founded on a strong acoustic/slide foundation which is perfectly suited to mono. The insistent acoustic attack of Street Fighting Man is unsurpassed in the mono mix but then the whole album benefits, from Sympathy For The Devil to Salt Of The Earth. And just have a listen to the subtle slow-burning build-up of Jig-saw Puzzle and you'll never underestimate Bill Wyman's contribution again.
This heavyweight slab of original vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and plays well with mono clarity. This strident mono mix comes across loud and clear. Both sides of the disc look excellent when viewed in normal daylight but show up a certain amount of fine marks including wispy hairlines and scuffing when viewed under harsh halogen lighting. But there are no nasty significant marks or feelable scratches of any kind, and the album plays very well with no skips, jumps or clicks. The very early matrices are XARL-8476-4A and XARL-8477-2A. A certain amount of spindle activity is apparent on these fine red Decca labels (see photos), indicating a reasonable level of play over the last 42 years. This fine playing copy of this outstanding Stones' album grades VG-.
The original laminated 'mono' printed gatefold sleeve is presentable enough but exhibits a degree of creasing here and there, and wear along the spine and opening edge. It is no disgrace, by any means though, and there are no rips, tears or unwanted writing anywhere. This shiny rare original mono gatefold warrants a grade of G+.
The album comes complete with its original printed poly-lined 'Made in England' inner sleeve dated July, 1968 ('7-68'), which is interesting because on July 26, 1968, the release of Beggar's Banquest was cancelled, and the album was not unleashed to the public until five months later in the December of '68. The '7-68' therefore means that this particular copy would have been among the very first held-back batch of mono Beggar's Banquets. How do I know this is the original sleeve? The unique impression of the label ridge on this mono copy matches exactly the impression on the polythene centre of the inner.
