The first hits compilation of the Rolling Stones is still one of the most potent collections of singles that one can find. Listening to it in 1966 or today, one can understand how, almost prematurely for the 1960s — as most of the material here dates from 1964 or 1965 — the Stones set themselves up as the decade's most visible rock & roll rebels. The defiant, in-your-face fuzztone riff and sexually frustrated lyrics of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and the frenetic pounding punk anthem "Get Off of My Cloud" are highlights of a 12-song set that has no weak points, only peaks — the louder-than-life rhythm guitars on "It's All Over Now" and "The Last Time," the wailing R&B of "Time Is on My Side," the balladry, folk, and soul style of "As Tears Go By" and "Tell Me," and all of the rest make for a body of work that's still amazing to hear four decades after the fact. Appearing as it did in the late winter of 1966, this collection completely missed the group's drift into psychedelia, and it has since been supplanted by Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, but Big Hits is still the most concentrated dose of the early Stones at their most accessible that is to be had, short of simply playing their first five U.S. albums. The artwork and photography were pretty cool too, and the original LP had one of rock's early classic gatefold album designs

There must be hundreds of compilations involving early Rolling Stones recordings. Most of them tampered with in studios, having audio and more or less legit re-mixes adjusted to some common perception about sound quality at time for releases. I always go for the earliest, or at least the ones where I can get closest to the original recordings. Of those there are especially two that make my day - German "Around And Around" and this. Initially issued in US (London NP-1/NPS-1) as a twelve track in March -66. When the UK version was due in November same year the band had already released a couple of new singles. That and the fact that earlier US and UK album releases had altering tracking made this very different with five cuts not appearing on the US release - "Come On", "Paint It Black", "Lady Jane", "Little Red Rooster" and "Have You Seen Yor Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow" - omitting "Tell Me", "Play With Fire" and "Good Times Bad Times" from the US version. Both are good in their own ways, but since I get "Little Red Rooster" and "Paint It Black" originals here it's my preference. I can't find one bad thing to say about it. You get a couple of top notch UK non-LP cuts, all true mono with excellent audio. The laminated fold/out sleeve has stapled sheets with pictures and Andrew Loog Oldham credit notes inside. In all a very plush package

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with the original 6-page insert/booklet  intact.

(c)           The record comes in the original POLY-LINED “Made in Great Britain” stock inner sleeve.

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(f)            Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(g)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.
