Label Conditions: Both immaculate: these have to be seen for real to be fully appreciated. The original owner told me he had played this record once and once only. These labels look brand new, yes true. Ultra clean, fresh and massively attractive. I cannot see a single spindle trace at all and the record was even difficult to get on to my LP12 spindle. A record not even run-in in vinyl terms. How many original stereo copies of this evergreen classic will still exist like this? This incredible Decca record has not seen light-of-day for decades and looks barely even handled. A ‘Beggar’s Banquet’ that beggars belief, this copy has been over-looked by time and it’s one and only owner. This record could and is likely to prove the ultimate upgrade for any Stones connoisseur.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A typical heavyweight Decca pressing of the golden era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, most all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference and I have always found this title one of the harder ones to find nice. Even the boxed copies rarely show up with a record this clean and so little played. This outstanding piece truly does remind of new and sounds the same. Only one record in many thousands will ever look like this and most of them will rarely be put on the open market. Most were played into submission on harsh, heavy-tracking record players of the times. So-much-so, many copies were disgarded and replaced with new copies to enjoy the experience again. The cover, although laminated, does not wear well but this one has little to fault. Not quite to the standard of the incredible record, but not too far short, that would almost be expecting the near impossible. Obviously covers get moved around over the years, but without any shadow of doubt, the record has barely made the trip outside and even the inner sleeve is exceptional. An unboxed copy of this universally popular title in this incredible, barely played condition is very rare, make no mistake about it.

Original Year of Release: 1968. One of the less easy unboxed ones to find as the format was replaced the following year.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their seventh original studio album from 1968 and many consider it their very best ever. I will concentrate more on it’s condition.

Cover Grade and Format: Strong Excellent. A very fine example for one that often darkens and creases badly. A gatefold format with laminate on front and back. This one has a solid, no peep-hole back and with a quite wide spine. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse International Ltd.

Lamination, Front & Back: Like The Beatles’ ‘White Album’, this is usually seen more an off-white these days and this is no exception, but only mildly so. The laminate retains a very fine shine and clarity and is fully adhered with no lifting or blistering at all. Even under light, this has minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling and marks or creasing are few and faint. Just one half moon on the front is the only one of any real note. Any of the few others are mainly fine edge types with a couple of light ones near the corners. A high degree of freshness is retained and handling appears very modest, only mild traces of rim impression on the back seen under light. A very nice looking cover overall.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically nothing to fault at all, any rub traces are minuscule.

Top Edges: Just small rubbing to the right corner area on the back edge.

Bottom Edges: Both practically unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering, minor thickening to the closed front. This is guaranteed untrimmed too. Record enters on the open back.

Spine and Text: The quite wide spine has compressed slightly, few avoid this over time. Solid, straight with a slight tilt to the right hence the front right edge is a little proud of the back, only a few millimeters, nothing of any great note. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and clear laminate. So often these spines badly crack and peel, this retains full laminate but the light compression is the main reason this has been graded down a little.

Corners: The corners have small tip rubs, the most on the spine top on the back but still only small. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this deceptively delicate cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better and remember, it must be a Garrod & Lofthouse version with an unboxed record inside with no peep hole to be early, those came alone in 1969. Not so many of those around of course. This still very attractive example should please many collectors but not quite the perfectionists or highly discerning. The record however…

The Inner Sleeve: EX++, UK patented but with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. The lining is solid and secure with a lovely neat window that remains very clear with near pristine circles. All edges solid and unsplit and there is little creasing, none heavy or even moderate. The slightest trace of glue darkening on the seams is the least anyone can expect but it’s far less than usual. A lovely old inner that will be hard to find much better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) is hardly doing this incredible record full justice. Now played just twice after my sound check. I hardly need have bothered but who could resist hearing such a wonderful album in this condition. A supreme visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on the highest quality vinyl as you would expect from Decca. Barely a mark or noteworthy blemish and this really does defy it’s great age, I cannot imagine finding a better one. Visually a glorious sight for the vinyl connoisseur and audiophle collector.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is reference standard with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. This leads you directly into the recording studio itself and this is first copy of this classic since I upgraded my LP12. This gave a flawless performance and was a sheer pleasure from beginning to end. No surface sounds or crackle and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No piledriver thick, heavy needles have ruined this one, just the way modern audiophile collectors want them. Few copies will even match this copy I feel sure, remember this is a still a record over 40-years-old+, hardly a spring chicken in vinyl terms for sure. The details gleaned from these totally unworn grooves even raised my eyebrows. Small details I swear I had never heard before, that’s the joy of a quality recording and system to enjoy them on. It’s the small details that make the difference as all hi-fi fans know. Without doubt, this has hardly seen light-of-day, the record well entrenched into it’s original sleeve, but no bag rash evident, just a wonderful clean disc that almost reminds of new. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful experience. This record will prove near impossible to find better and is unreservedly recommended to all. The ultimate record upgrade? – Very likely.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
