The Rolling Stones : Exile On Main St A2 / B2 / C2 / D2 1st Press w/ Attached Postcards 1972

This early first press variation plays to a superb standard with no interference as such.  There are no clicks or pops and only a couple of very quiet ticks on one fade out.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is stunning and the only background really is a very minor amount of distortion on 3/4 tracks.  Please believe when I say it is very minor!  I only mention it because I state any background even if totally non-intrusive.  This is easily one of the finest examples of this classic album that I have heard in quite a while and has clearly been very well preserved and only lightly played over the last 52 years.

As for the uni-pack gatefold it is absolutely stunning!  It has to be the best I have ever seen and has only a couple of very minor corner creases.  It is so clean and has retained its original shape perfectly which is very rare.  This version has the grey TM symbol on the back.  The 12 fully attached postcards are in perfect condition as are the printed inner sleeves.  A stunning 'package' overall.

Visual description

The vinyls are in excellent condition and still have a very strong glossy sheen with no scratches.  I can only see a small number of ultra faint hairlines when looking under a bright light and they are purely superficial.  S3 does have a small faint scuff area but this again has no affect on the audio.  The run out grooves are very clean and the yellow labels are unmarked with only a little spindle wear on the second record.

Play grading  

The intro on 'Rocks Off' has just one minor static sound on the very first note and then Jagger's opening vocal section plays to perfection.  From then on it plays with phenomenal power and depth and with none of that distorted sound that you so often find on heavily played copies.  A 'busy' track and yet the sonic quality does not suffer for it and right to the end it plays with real precision.  A Mint- introduction to the album.

The even more powerful 'Rip This Joint' plays with stunning quality with no intrusion at all.  Mint

The intro on 'Shake Your Hips' plays with sublime clarity as does the rest of the track!  The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio here is sensational and the long fade out has not even a single dust tick, that's a measure of the clarity here.  Mint

'Casino Boogie' plays to the same high end standard without any background.  Once again the depth and definition is superb and there is nothing that detracts from the audio.  The instrumental end section is just incredible, so strong and deep.  A couple of light statics on the fade out so I will say say Mint- accordingly.

'Tumbling Dice' ends the side with imperious quality and there is barely any inner groove distortion, a genuine rarity.  A Mint- version.

The acoustic intro on 'Sweet Virginia' plays beautifully with no background and the opening vocal is just as impressive.  It continues in the same way and again there are no negatives.  Another example of why a vinyl can play 'as new' if 1) it has been carefully looked after, 2) hardly played and 3) cleaned.  Mint

'Torn And Frayed' and 'Black Angel' both play with stunning precision i.e. no background and as 'clean' as they were when first released back in '72.  Mint

The piano intro on 'Loving Cup' plays perfectly and it proceeds in the same way with a clarity and depth that is second to none.  For a final track the audio is so clean and 'fresh' sounding and Mint is again deserved.

'Happy' plays with stunning quality from start to finish.  Great power and definition and no background whatsoever.  Mint

'Turd On The Run' has maybe a hint of that distorted sound but I only mention it to be 100% 'complete' with my grading.  It is so so minimal and is not intrusive in any way.  That's the benefit of a track by track grading!  It still plays so well with only a couple of dull ticks at the end of the fade out.  Near Mint

'Ventilator Blues' is faultless with nothing to detract from the audio.  Jagger's vocal is powerful / raw here and yet it is so 'clean' sounding with no distortion on the top end.  Mint

The segue into 'I Just Want To See His Face' is perfect and then the intro has only a handful of barely audible ticks.  The vocal section plays with sublime clarity and depth.  There is just one minor static and just minimal light static right at the end but again Near Mint is deserved.

The intro and opening vocal on 'Let It Loose' play very clearly with only the bare minimum of very light background static.  As Watts comes in the audio is superb and it continues in the same way and I only heard a minimal amount of light static for 3/4 seconds during the mid instrumental.  I will say Near Mint but the vast majority is certainly stronger than that.

'All Down the Line' begins S4 in fine style with outstanding power and depth through every section.  There is no interference and Mint is 100% deserved.

Next up is 'Stop Breaking Down' and the intro has only a minor touch of distortion, nothing to worry about as it is so minimal.  Jagger's opening vocal is perfect and from then on it plays with genuine quality with barely any distortion.  The mid instrumental in particular is so strong and deep and the remainder plays to such a high standard also.  The end instrumental is fantastic!  Near Mint but even that seems a little harsh!

The opening vocal on 'Shine A Light' plays with great clarity and there is barely any static.  As the volume picks up the playback is stunning and this high end standard does not drop as it progresses.  The quieter mid vocal / instrumental is faultless and there are only a couple of minor statics in the quieter section that follows, hardly worth a mention really.  The final vocal / instrumental has no intrusion and Mint- is about right.

'Soul Survivor' ends this classic album with stunning audio.  That's quite rare in a way because it often displays some inner groove distortion but not here!  The sonic quality is so impressive and the power of the audio really stands out.  Perhaps just a hint of minor distortion towards the end but that again is just me being 100% honest but in all honesty you barely notice it.  This is a stunning Mint- version.

The Gatefold, Postcards & Inner Sleeves

The cover is easily one of the finest examples I have ever seen.  It still holds its original shape and structure so well which is a genuine rarity as it is often found compressed in certain areas.  The spines are as wide as they ever were and there is barely any rubbing on the corners.  The wide spines are in fantastic condition and the front cover just has one minor crease in the lower right corner.  The back cover has one minor rub bottom left and both sides are incredibly clean with no marking, fading or creasing.  The inside of the gatefold is again so clean and what is impressive is that the 'opening' for the inner sleeves is perfect with zero wear.  There is only a minor crease in the bottom left and right corners but overall this is a stunning example of this iconic cover.

The 12 original postcards are still attached and all remain in perfect condition with no marking etc.  The printed inner sleeves are superb with marking, spotting or creasing.  No side splits either.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
