ROLLING STONES 'GET YOUR KICKS' 1965 EUROPEAN TOUR ~ RARE NON-TMOQ  MONA INSERT COVER

CONDITION: VINYL EX  JACKET EX ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection this winter and pulling out some LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 40 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.
This week on EBay I am offering up this fantastic, clean copy of the classic Rolling Stones 'Collector' album "Get Your Kicks." This is my original copy from the mid 70s that I've taken great care of for many years.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a great 'Collector' record featuring live recordings from the 1965 European Tour.
This release, from the mid 1970s, is on the original Mona label and has the early Maroon labels. This is the first edition release of this album. Later reissues had different color inserts and different colored record labels.
The cover photo is great. Jagger grabbing his crotch and Brian standing next to him playing his famous, mythical, white Vox Mark III Teardrop guitar. Keith is on the other side of Mick, playing his famous '59 Les Paul.
The bulk of this record contains the first night's show at the Olympia in Paris, April 17, 1965. It was their first concert in Paris and was a great show. There aren't many good sounding recordings from the 1965 tour available and this Paris show is one of them. 
The rest of side 2 has 4 songs from the Scandinavian Tour. The sleeve says they are from the Kurhaus in Scheveningen Sweden on August 8, 1964, but Stones scholars argue that they may be from a different night on the Scandinavian tour. The short 1965 tour of Scandinavia was Rolling Stones' first European tour. They played several shows in Denmark and Sweden.
Then are then 2 tracks from the BBC's 'Saturday Club' show recorded on October 1st, 1965.

"At last, here is a high quality recording of the riotous 1965 European tour. The incredible charisma of the Rolling Stones, the excitement of the Paris audience is completely apparent on this recording of the first appearance of the Stones in France. 
All previously issued recordings of this concert wither in comparison. Also included are four songs from the 1964 Scandinavian tour and two songs from 1965 "BBC Saturday Club." 
Both recordings have not been issued on LP before."

~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Stones were very busy in 1965; touring, recording and making personal appearances and radio shows, both in Europe and in the States. Many different UK bands toured America in 1965, joining the British Invasion, but the Stones were different.
The Stones looked and dressed just like the other kids and looked rather scruffy. This was the period when bands dressed in matching suits to perform. The Stones looked like they were pulled in off the street.
The Stones were loose and relaxed on stage, scruffy looking kids from England. They looked like they had just met and jumped up on stage. 
There wasn't a whole lot of theatrics or choreography to their shows back then, unlike many of the other bands of the day. Charlie and Bill keeping the groove going strong, both barely moving at all. Charlie's simple, but perfect drumming and Bill standing almost still, playing his bass in his 'vertical' style. Their Vox AC-30 Amplifiers cranked all the way up.
That was a big part of their appeal. They looked just like the fans they were playing for. The Stones made their fans feel like they could do what their heroes were doing and go start their own band.
~~~~~~~~ The Stones music was taking a drastic turn in 1965. It was a great time to see them live in concert.
During 1965 they went from well mannered English kids playing blues covers to unkempt, scruffy kids singing their own songs about sex, partying, independence and rowdiness.
They started the year playing mostly Blues and R&B covers, but by the end of the year had released 'Satisfaction' and 'Get Off of My Cloud', taking their music in a new direction.
Brian Jones was at his musical peak around the time of this 1965 recording as well. On this record and tour you can really hear Brian shine.
The drugs hadn't taken over yet and he was still the master of his voice and instruments. Brian plays some fantastic slide guitar licks and plays some terrific harp on this record.
On this 1965 tour, Brian played most of the harmonica bits, while Mick danced around, sang and banged his tambourine. Before the Stones '65 Tour, the tambourine was a folk percussion instrument. Mick was one of the first to feature it as a 'lead' instrument and play around with it onstage. 
Brian Jones was clearly one of rock and roll’s most unique and dynamic guitarists. Brian and Keith had a great sound playing together in 1965. They developed what Keith has called the "ancient art of weaving" where they both simultaneously play lead and rhythm guitar at the same time, without clear boundaries between the two roles, punctuating each other's work.  It made the 2 guitars sound like four or five. It became a Rolling Stones trademark. 
There is some great slide guitar bits from Brian on this live recording as well as some Bo Diddley style bits.

~~~~ Once the Stones took on Andrew Loog Oldham as manager, he started pushing the band away from their blues roots and towards a more Pop style. Covering other people's songs didn't pay the bills. He wanted the band to write their own songs, like the Beatles, and pushed the 'glimmer twins' to write together, leaving Brian out of the loop. Oldham also wanted to make Jagger's charisma and flamboyance the focus of their live performances, moving Brian to the background. 
The further away from their blues roots they got, the more Brian felt disconnected and uninterested. After this 1965, Mick took over more of the Harp bits and Brian branched out to other instruments like the Dulcimer, Recorder and Sitar. He was an essential part of the next few albums, but their style was very different.
Brian would slowly self-implode and was famously dead at 27. Mick and Keith then took the band in a very successful direction.
His time in the band may have been short, but Brian was the original leader of the band, a talented musician, and gave them their name, but he was always a bluesman and it's obvious on this record.
There have been many changes for the Stones over the years, but one of the key transitions was Pre and Post 'Satisfaction'. This album shows the band at the peak of their Pre-Satisfaction Era.
Overall, a fantastic LP of rare live tracks from the 1965 European Tour.

VINYL: The vinyl is still fantastic. Clean and bright. No obvious hairlines, scratches or damage. I'll call it VG+, to keep everyone happy, but you can see from my photos how terrific it looks. Much better than VG+
LABELS. The labels are clean and bright. No marks or defects. They used the maroon color to suggest the early London pressings of the first few Stones LPs. The spindle holes are clean, suggesting infrequent or very careful play.
JACKET: The jacket is excellent. Clean and bright, still mostly in the shrink wrap. The Jacket is a plain white cover, with a golden yellow wrap-around paper insert. The corners are sharp, no seam splits or issues. The paper insert is perfect.
I've owned this record since the mid 70s and it has been sleeved and kept in great condition for around 45 years now. It's about as good a copy of this mid 70s release as you're likely to find.
