Label/Format: Decca – unboxed format. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic for a very popular mono record. Fresh, clean and looking lightly handled or likely played. Any spindle traces are tiny, very few and incredibly faint. Simply compare to what most of these early monos look like and were subjected to. Without any doubt, this has been only very lightly played and survived those heady beat days of loaning, parties and Dansettes.

Weight of this Record: 146 grams. A very good average weight for this one.

Rarity: Scarce: Like Beatles records, Rolling Stones early albums sold in vast numbers, especially in mono but were usually heavily played, often into submission and are barely worth looking at let alone listening to. As I always state, conditions are paramount on these early classics. Unboxed mono copies are invariably the most susceptible and prone to wear and invisible damage simply by what they played on at the time. All evidence, including superb clean sound, suggests this one has received few plays. The record has only a few fine and light surface marks with no sound and no heavy arm drops or jolts have inflicted any penetrating scratches on this one. Such copies are far rarer.

Stamper Codes: 1 K / 1 MG (the second letters are faint and not that distinct, especially the M).

Brief Info: The Rolling Stones third album that most interested collectors will already know well enough. The main factor worthy of note is the American and the UK issues varied considerably with different artwork and song titles. Clearly, this is a UK repressing and in lovely all-round condition with only very modest hints of it’s age.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT, marked down a fraction from Excellent because of fine ringwear on the back. Thick, heavy record and thin card, this is hardly unusual and many suffer far heavier wear than this. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This wraps around the closed edges but the only end is via the spine. The top and bottom ones are tucked inside. This is a dedicated Mono cover and has a more grey finish to the front with, maybe the merest hint of a faint green hue. Made with thin card, hence very wear and damage prone. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Lamination & Front: The front is in fabulous condition and grade on it’s own nearer Excellent(+) or better. The laminate is fully adhered with no lifting of blistering and that for Clarifoil, can be considered a real bonus. Under light, a mild record impression can be seen that has very slightly dulled, but with normal viewing this barely shows at all. Any marks or creases are very few, light and equally faint and the laminate retains a high degree of freshness, clarity and shine. The white border is clean and untoned with no burring or thumb creasing, even on the right entry side. This is very attractive indeed and sets a very high standard.

Cover Back: These black and white unprotected backs rarely escape grubbiness and rubbing. Any here is only light and this has aged far better than many around. Often these appear dirty and very tired looking, this is not the case on this one. The fine ringwear on the left side again is much finer than most and escaping this altogether on vintage mono covers is hard enough. Three small indentations are seen under light near the right edge but barely conspicuous with normal viewing and overall rubbing to the matt black surface is only very light indeed as are handling marks for which these surfaces are ruthlessly revealing. Near the bottom edge towards the right, a small ‘65’ is written in red – maybe the year of issue – pure speculation, it’s only small and light anyway. Given all the facts, I consider this back to be in splendid condition, the overall lack of creasing or laminate issues on such thin card is unusually good news.

Top Edge: Barely any noteworthy wear and quite straight too and still smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs.

Bottom Edge: Very similar again, any thickening to the back panel due to ‘resting’ all these years is minimal.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with practically no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. The thinness of the card is very apparent when viewed end-on and this vulnerable edge has survived in superb condition.

Spine and Text: Great spine too: with so many of these quite thin types mashed and buckled, this is in lovely condition with little more than a tiny few ultra fine hairline creases that show little. Solid, quite straight with little compression of note. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled, clear laminate and even this retains a strong shine.

Corners: All in very fine shape being pointed and still sharp. Any tip rubbing or creasing being very light and mild.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this fragile thin card cover. Not without a few blemishes or minor wear, but at this great age and popularity, I think it’s earned the right too. With so many seen literally falling apart, almost held together with grime and tape, this is simply a lovely example that has just slightly and naturally aged. This is just the way many collectors want them. If the fine ringwear and the small written ‘65’ is an issue however, do not bid.

The Inner: The heavy duty polylined Decca inner is also in super condition. The only issue of note is one corner has been cut. This either a manufacture fault or it was done by the original owner – that I do not know. That apart, it looks lovely with minimal ageing with any discolouration faint mainly one the seam areas. The lining is ultra clear and the two circles of the window practically immaculte. All edges secure bar the cut corner, this is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT. Both sides have very light dulling from the inner sleeve lining. Often referred to as ‘inner bag rash’, this varies in intensity and unless very severe, has NO sound as the case here. In terms of this on a scale of 1 to 10, I give this barely a 2 and it only is seen under angled light mainly on the run-out groove areas. I do not downgrade for this natural occurence that is totally superficial and non-sounding. Simply, the disc has been left inside it’s inner undisturbed for so many years, the lining clings to the record’s surface. This is a lovely visual copy for a vintage mono record. It is very clean with fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed on the usual high quality Decca vinyl. These popular Stones classics seldom survive with so few plays and less marks. Any present on this one are light and quite few of, they have no sounds at all. No Dansette needle drops or jolts on this one and absolutely no groove wear whatsoever. Only a tiny percentage of available, or even non-available copes will be seen with no marks at all, these records were bought to be played and minor non-sounding blemishes are nigh-on impossible to avoid. Both labels, sound and fine looking playing surfaces reitterate few plays and this mono gem will please many, if not most realistic collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This third Stones album plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. In fact, this record plays with stunning ultra clean mono sound and that’s virtually pristine. Totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. What an absolute joy to hear these old songs sounding so wonderful, the beautiful twang of the guitars and Jagger’s vocals sounding almost in the room. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this early unboxed copy that has no irritating crackle or ‘mono’ noises caused by heavyweight or badly misaligned tracking. Both channels are clean and sharp and remain focused and precise, this too on a very clinical turntable that takes no prisoners, revealing all – good and bad – but nothing bad on this one. This is little short of perfection and I did play this at considerable volume. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, and for sound, this really is just that, wonderful. For clean audio quality, this copy will prove high-on impossible to find better and can be strongly recommended. Visually not for the perfectionist, but the sound is truly exceptional and that, for me is the most important factor by far.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
