Label Conditions: Both in superb conditions: very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These are only small and show little, these too on very revealing labels that will seldom be seen much better.

Mode / Speed: Stereo (with a mono cover) / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. A very good weight for any record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce, and arguably more so as an unboxed stereo. The psychedelic year of 1967 was still very much the mono era and the majority of records were still purchased in that format. Finding little played stereo examples is quite difficult, and this one is a beauty. One of the absolute albums to own in mono and stereo as the mix and presentation of the music is very different. The mono cut has a more punchy sound, the stereo images better – psych albums enjoy the channel separation for effect, and this works superbly on this album. I have rarely, if ever, seen this album in better conditions. I will add quickly, this copy has a dedicated mono cover – this hardly unusual and it is exactly as it was purchased from new by one owner. Errors happened and this is hardly unique, so make sure this is not an issue if you wish to bid. The condition of the mono cover is simply superb with a hugely impressive and undamaged 3D front. The lacking bowing is quite unusual to find and hopefully my different pictures prove how flat this one still is. Any excessive heat, cold, humidity or moisture affects this famous cover, so many are seen bent at the adhesive reacts to the aforementioned conditions. Not only that, this cover is as fresh, clean and attractive as when made with a shine most others will be envious of. Even the inner sleeve is unsplit or torn with NO repairs, and that is a huge ask and near impossible to find like that. A copy in this condition is rare, make no mistake. If super looks and sound quality is demanded, well look no further – both are here.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Stones gem will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper - their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing psych records. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, a little weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius - ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations. This album is a barrage of sound with brass, psychedelia and effects and for The Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both the mono and stereo mixes as both sound very different. The mono version is more robust and solid with greater bass depth and solidity. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one - it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up - this is a very intense experience. Play this album loud and you will be left spinning. So often seen in a trashed state, or at best just well played (a sign of those times) with worn, often badly focused sound qualities and even distortion and heavy crackle. The massive sound and complex production embedded in these grooves always made this one of the most prone-to-wear records ever made in this period. Early heavyweight record players, so often mono, simply wore quickly this most fragile of recordings - the sounds, the high frequencies especially, always fare very badly with high frequency clipping running into moderate, even severe distortion. I have heard so few of these that play perfectly throughout, but this superb stereo copy gives of it’s very best with nigh-on nothing to fault at all. With truly astonishing sound and detail and totally lacking that unwanted groovewear and noises, this is a diamond for more discerning Rolling Stones fan. Even the very intense start to side two plays to an exceptional standard and devoid of the clipping and crackle heard on so many. It’s quite clear to me this record has hardly been played, and then with utmost care. No arm drops or jolts have occurred on this one with very clean playing surfaces with little more than a tiny few ultra light surface traces seen under angled light. This record is exceptional and defies its age and potential groove-wear. The album’s sheer intensity and brilliant content will not allow you sit there and wait for any minor blemishes that quite honestly, never arrived. This record when played on any genuine ‘hi-fi’ deck will literally blow you away and no other format will even run this close. The only (arguably small) issue is the cover, that has the word mono and the appropriate catalogue number. That apart, it’s exactly the same as the stereo one. When in such stunning condition, this more than compensates and this album is exactly as when purchased, so a mishap in selling from the distant past – this far from unusual. It will prove immensely difficult to find this cover better and the same goes for the fragile inner sleeve. For those wanting this album, it will prove incredibly hard to find a better all-round unboxed example, so not one to be dismissed or lost lightly.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: very prone to damage and warping badly to the adhesion of the 3D picture on the cover front. Atmospheric conditions e.g. humidy, cold and heat react with the glue and make this cover bow, often severely so it becomes mishapen and even badly bent. Few of these will ever lay dead-flat these days – this one DOES and trying to force one to do so is nigh-on impossible.

Cover Condition and Details: MINT(-): and not just one of the best SMR covers I have ever seen, this ranks as one of the very best 1960s covers I have held or viewed – this is gorgeous. The very famous 3D cover of course – a gatefold format with a laminated front and back. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. This is the very first format, original, no peep-hole mono/stereo indicators, they came later in 1969. This is a MONO cover with a Stereo record, so PLEASE BE AWARE of this fact. Without doubt one of rocks greatest ever covers and this a truly beautiful example. Included also is the red and white psych inner sleeve in equally impressive condition.

Cover Lamination: Unless a cover in this condition is actually seen, many will truly not realise what a brand new one of these once looked like. The laminate both sides simply GLEAMS with the most incredible glossy finish you will ever see. So very few ever retain this incredible shine these days, most are aged with dulling or fogged surfaces – when seen like this, it’s a thing of incredible beauty. Any friction rubs or dulling on either side are tiny, few and very faint, any minor traces seen critically under angled light, but look hard. Blemsihes? – well nothing is ever perfect as far as I am concerned. A small, light surface crease near the top edge on the front and three very fine and faint surface marks on the back that are invisible unless again scrutinised under light. All is fully adhered with no lifts or blisters bar a tiny one on the bottom left corner of the front, it hardly even shows and the artwork retains such vivid colour and freshness, it almost looks just off the printing press. Even under the closest scrutiny under light, there is barely even a hairline surface trace on either side (bar the aforementioned tiny surface marks on the back), the surfaces are almost as smooth and shiny as glass and I can simply cannot ever imagine finding these areas better. Little short of world-class and looking truly magnificent.

The 3D Picture: This looks equally impressive, the edges do show light traces of the adhesive staining on the edges (most near the top), but this is totally natural and few will avoid this. Only light anyway and little to distract from the famous hologram 3D graphic. Under light (again), just one ultra fine and faint hairline mark and that’s about it. I have never seen another with so few surface marks or scratches than this. Most are badly marked and aged, and all too often, bowed. This one has been cover protected from new and has never been exposed to any extremes of condition to cause it to warp or bow. The 3D ‘plate’ has been nicely applied squarely and still sits nigh-on flat as can be seen on my pictures. Quite simply, they rarely, if ever get better than this.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Beautiful artwork and looking fresh, clean and magnificent with hardly a blemish to a near perfect design. Worthy of note too, the left side is very flat and unbowed, remember, this is a single thickness front and carrying some substantial weight in the 3D graphic so this is fairly unusual too.

Top Edges: All edges here are magnificent: just one tiny area unstraightened by the minor thumb surface crease on the front top as mentioned further up – this is minor in the extreme and finding these fragile edges neater, sharper or better looking will prove near impossible.

Bottom Edges: Very light patchy rubbing to the main folded edge, the thin front edge is near pristine.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are absolutely superb, practically as new with incredible sharpeness and GUARANTEED UNTRIMMED. Barely even a hint of thickening or burr traces. The record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and uncrushed with any compression or tilt minimal. Folded square too, all edges meeting up closely together and parallel – this makes a huge difference to visual pleasure for the more discerning collector. No damage or wear at all and all text is pristine, unworn and clear under the solid, unpeeled or cracked laminate that remains almost silky smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs. This has the Mono text and number which is printed in the inverted position (please see my close-up pictures of this detail).

Corners: A most difficult and fragile cover but ALL corners are in the most crisp and near wear-free conditions you can imagine. Any tip rubs are tiny and faint and all have survived the years undinked or creased – put this into true perspective – how many will even come even close to matching these? All retain better than excellent shape and most hit the dizzy heights of near mint.

Cover Summary: I cannot reitterate enough just how fragile this cover is. This has so few blemishes, it will take something little short of miraculous to better it. The only issue (I state yet again), this is a mono cover with a stereo record. If anyone needs a mono cover upgrade, look no further – just look at the equally impressive record and inner sleeve as a bonus. But let’s be serious, this is a stunning SMR cover and simply holding and viewing it will give utmost pleasure. One that in future I will have to judge others by, sadly I guess, few will ever reach the true excellence of this one. All but the nigh-on impossible to please will be thrilled to own this gem.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and as delicate an inner as you will ever find, similar to the ‘Pepper’ inner and just as fragile. Made from ultra thin paper, non-lined, this is rarely seen untorn or split and often with heavy ringwear from the usually thick Decca-pressed record. Well, the only blemish on this one is minor corner creasing – more semi-creasing really – and few will better this significantly. Incredibly unusually, this has ALL edges intact with splits, tears or repairs and the lack of ring marks on the dark surfaces is equally unusual. The reason quite obvious: the original owner has the very good sense to store the record in a replacement inner, hence this is almost as made. The creases, I was told, present from new. Remember, packers at the manufacturers were often less than subtle inserting the records and inners into covers, so these minor creases happened. Even the recesssed top opening is crisp, unburred or thickened, so few will avoid tears and thinning or which this has none. With most seen scruffy, aged, faded, torn, badly creased or tape edge reinforced, this sets a very high standard and my grading possibly hardly reflects the fact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and this being ultra critical. This is a top quality Decca pressing, with very thick vinyl and deeper, wider grooves. The music information lies beneath any minuscule, ultra fine, few and very faint surface traces seen under light and sound quality is very high indeed. An early pressed unboxed stereo copy that has a lovely shine and is intense black and without doubt, played very little. Any minor dulling on the run-outs, a result of being stored within a lined inner for many, many years without being disturbed – this is NOT bag rash bye-the-way. With so many seen covered with ugly deep scratches on washed out vinyl ,covered in grimy fingermarks and laden with dust, this copy is almost a breath of fresh air and such available copies are at a real premium these days. A copy that has avoided any needle drops or arm jolts or damage, this copy tracks effortlessly and perfectly and is very flat, these early pressings will not be easy to find much cleaner these days. I am certain this record has not seen light-of-day for decades and all that beautiful original sound locked-in these near pristine grooves. The first view of those deeply coloured green labels will thrill any future collector enough, but when the sound and detail is heard, it will prove to be the ultimate investment.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record plays with astonishing sound that will never be beaten by modern digital formats (and possibly few available vinyl copies). Very powerful, rich and detailed audio quality that gives a very different performance to the mono version. Big and bold in dynamics and unique mix and production, both formats are essential. It has terrific genuine high fidelity sound, any audio blemishes are minimal to the point of barely worthy of mention as already mentioned in my preamble - I state this critically, most listeners will love this copy. I am, I hope, a discerning listener and careful grader (I have been told on several occasions I actually under grade – but I can live with that). This record would please me to own, keep, and enjoy. The sound on this album is special and I found barely any blemishes worthy of note. Even the quieter passages play well with practically nothing unwanted. The voices are recorded loud and forward and they rarely avoid clipping. Even the shouted voices at the start of side two are sharp and focused and not masked by crackle as many are. Just holding that vintage cover and hearing the in-built power of this vintage Decca record will please. Play this album loud - the music and sound demands it, and this copy can cope – treated carefully it will last indefinitely if played on a modern lightweight deck. These grooves portray practically zero wear and sound is polished, focused and sharp and importantly enjoyable. Like Beatles albums, this, and other Stones albums are so often seen totally trashed and unplayable, hearing this outstanding copy is like a breath of fresh air compared to many. I will never state ‘pristine’ or ‘perfect’ but I feel exceptional is more than appropriate and it’s a really challenging recording and I enjoyed it immensely. A superb example and I feel again most fans and collectors will love it. Worthy of my highest recommendation and not one to be lost.

End Piece: I hope I have not dragged this one out too much, but this is an important album - arguably one of the most difficult albums within the Rolling Stones catalgoue (if not ever). They don’t show up that often in fine playing conditions with hugely attractive, little-worn covers and totally intact neat inners. Even the laughably under-valued price guides are now putting very large values on this and other early Stones albums, and prices are set to rise even higher and just have. With the only blemish of note being a mono cover with a stereo record, the individual collector will have to make their own mind’s up about this. Personally, I feel this one is just so nice to let go and seldom do such fresh and well-preserved examples hit the open market. A true psych classic that simply gets better and better the more you hear it. The Rolling Stones dared to be different on this landmark issue and I for one tip my hat to that. A priceless album.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
