Cat Number: TXL 103.

Label, format and Conditions: Turquoise Decca unboxed format. Lovely attractive examples, very clean with clear defined text but difficult to scan as the silver ink reflects hence photographs this time. Spindle marks are around moderate but very fine indeed and have removed no ink. Hopefully my pictures will show what to expect. These are much finer than seen from most mono record players and have very little visibility with normal viewing. Barely any wear traces around the hole rim. Overall a really lovely unboxed pair and so hard to find on mono copies.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A very impressive 160 grams. Nearly 20 grams heavier than my lost mono copy of this album, that was not a ‘1’ matrix copy.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: A very early -1P / -P1 mono copy with 3D cover and psych inner is a rare find these days. Although this copy has a small few fine surface marks and has clearly been played a several times, the sound quality overall is astonishingly good and plays with great detail and typical mono dynamics. This is a very difficult mono record and one of the most essential in that format ever made with a very different mix and sound. Any mono example that has avoided any deep, penetrating scratches is an exception to the rule and few will ever play without some distortion or often considerable groovewear. The sounds embedded are complex and very intense and loud, few survive those old heavyweight piledriver stylus from the mono era. Inferior sapphire tipped pickups that often tracked in excess of 10 grams, often with coins added atop so stacking of singles could be ‘tracked’, more like gouged. Most of a certain age will remember the terrible use and abuse these mono classics received. This nothing like that and any mild marks or minuscule sound degrading this offers is considered by many as normal use. This record plays with fantastic sound and exceeds it’s still excellent looks. The 3D cover, a mono original of course, is superb too and one of the best I have seen for some considerable time. It has a little minor edge wear and a relatively light, almost inconspicuous mark on the back (the dreaded zipper I feel sure from ‘Sticky Fingers’), the position almost confirms this. The inner also looks lovely, near impossible to find devoid of edge splits, this had a couple of very fine ones which I very carefully repaired. This being honest, quite honestly so neat, I doubt if many would have even noticed. A copy like this is very hard to find these days and at last, the new price guides are putting a more realistic price on this prized album.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Stones gem will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper - their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing psych records. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius - ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations. This album is a barrage of sound with brass and effects and for The Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both the mono and stereo mixes as both sound very different. The mono version is more robust and solid with greater bass depth and solidity, I am sure it has more detail too. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one - it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up - this is a very intense experience. Play this album loud and you will be left spinning. This album is so often seen in a trashed state, especially in mono, or at best just heavily played (a sign of those times) with worn, often badly focuse sound qualitities and even distortion and heavy crackle. The massive sound and complex production embedded in these grooves always made this one of the most prone-to-wear records ever made in this period. Early heavyweight record players, so often mono, simply wore quickly this most fragile of recordings - the sounds, the high frequencies especially, always fare very badly with high frequency clipping running into moderate, even severe distortion. I have yet to hear a copy of this that plays absolutely ‘perfectly’ in mono throughout, but this gives a very fine performance with any audio issues minor with any surface sounds few and infrequent, very light and minimal and is devoid of any pops or clicks, another real bonus. This copy plays with truly astonishing sound and detail and portrays few traces of groovewear. Even the very intense start to side two plays to an exceptional standard and practically devoid of the clipping and crackle heard on so many. It’s quite clear to me this record has been played several times, but overall, carefully. No arm drops or jolts have occurred on this one with very clean playing surfaces with little more than light surface marks and fine hairlines that have no effect on sound. Aforementioned misdemenours left crators or deep scratches that have severe repercussions on tracking and sound, this is not the case here, this plays effortlessly. Such is the stunning sound reproduction on this early mono copy, I swear any minuscule sound blemishes simply drifted over my head or were lost in the massive sound mix and I say again there were hardly any anyway. This record is exceptional and defies its age and potential groove-wear. Not really designed to be played on modern stereo equipment but this gives a really lovely account of itself throughout with any sound degrading tiny. The album’s sheer intensity and brilliant content will not allow you sit there and wait for any minor blemishes. This record when played on any genuine ‘hi-fi’ deck will literally blow you away and no other format will even run this close and the mono format remains exclusive to the vinyl format. The record comes in its original psych inner, a very nice one too with just a little mild crinkle – a very delicate thin paper inner that was not lined, its seldom seen this good. My ultra careful repairs of the neat seam splits almost unnoticeable. The 3D cover is beautiful and will seldom be found better and a significant fact, this is unbowed and lies dead flat. For collectors wanting a very fine, if not pristine all-round mono example of this famous old psych album, well this is worthy of the highest consideration. The positives outweight any minor negatives and one much better pressed this early will almost command a king’s ransom. This is way, way better than a compromise copy but does fall just a little short for the perfectionist, any doubts, don’t bid, simple.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: Very prone to damage and warping badly to the adhesion of the 3D picture on the cover front. Atmospheric conditions e.g. humidy, cold and heat react with the glue and make this cover bow, often severely so it becomes mishapen and even badly bent. Few of these will ever lay dead-flat these days – this one DOES and trying to force one to do so is nigh-on impossible.

Cover Condition and Details: I cannot grade this beautiful looking cover less than Excellent, and for sheer good looks it deserves more. The very famous 3D cover, a gatefold format, laminated front and back. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. This is the very first format, original, no peep-hole mono/stereo indicators, they came later in 1969. Without doubt one of rocks greatest ever covers and this a truly beautiful example. Few available examples will better this significantly, one with little wear and no misshaping or bowing to the picture and also this has no glue marks or fogging like so many. Like the record this gets trashed all too often and is easily damaged. I have even seen examples with the 3D picture that has clearly been restuck after being pulled-off, usually with pretty disastrous results.

Cover Lamination: The laminate both sides looks very fresh, clean and very shine indeed. All is fully adhered and the front in particular is exceptional with little to fault. The odd corner and edge crease only and these show little. The back has similar few creases but does have a surface scuff just above the title, as mentioned above, I suspect that zipper on ‘Sticky Fingers’, that cover does have a lot to answer for sometimes. Anyway, this mark barely shows with normal viewing but can be seen when tilted to light. The actual is undamaged and the laminate has survived any real penetration, the scuff can be felt with the fingertip however. With normal viewing both sides look truly superb and barely anything unwanted is seen.

The 3D Picture: This looks very nice indeed and no milkiness around the edges some are seen with. It has only a few fine surface marks only really visible with angled viewing. With ‘normal’ straight-on viewing barely anything shows and this retains lovely rich colour and has tremendous 3D effect. No doubts whatsoever, this has never come adrift and been restuck and this is adhered fully square on the front’s surface. Yes I have seen some twisted examples that do not visually please. This has not chipped at all and the edges are crisp and very sharp and has the least evidence of glue marks I have seen. Lovely psych artwork, this really looks strong to the eye. Few avoid some surface marks or blemishes and often these are major scuffs and deep scratches, this has nothing like that, the marks present on this example are fine to very fine only and unobtrusive (unless the holder prefers to view at an angle). Another important factor is the picture is still stuck fast and is perfectly flat with no bowing of the cover’s front. As explained above, many of these bend and warp with age, humidity and storing conditions can be a huge factor in this. Once these bend, rarely will they flatten out again and I have seen some examples before that have alarming bows in them and they do look less than wonderful. Remember this is a very early example, now well over 40-years-old, it’s almost in exceptional condition and really does still look lovely, I feel most collectors will enjoy it, but again if perfection is the only option…

Cover Gatefold Inner: Beautiful artwork and looking fresh, clean and magnificent with hardly a blemish to a near perfect design. Worthy of note too, the left side is very flat and unbowed, remember, this is a single thickness front and carrying some substantial weight in the 3D graphic so this is fairly unusual too.

Top Edges: The fragile front is mostly sharp with any thickening or burring mild and very light. The back is lovely and any rub traces very small and light.

Bottom Edges: The front is similar to the top. The back has moderate rubbing, this being the rest edge, few avoid it. The very centre has thinned and with critical examination viewing from inside the storage area, faint light can be seen when pointed directly to a window. There is no evidence of any real split.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges are very neat and show little wear at all. The back opening edge shows mere hints of thickening and any burring is tiny and faint. Only end-on viewing gives any clue, the actual edge of the design is totally crisp and undisturbed.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine and even this retains a great shine. Solid and robust, straight and uncrushed with any compression or tilt minimal. Folded square too, both right edges meeting up closely together and parallel. No damage or wear at all and all text is pristine, unworn and clear under the solid, unpeeled or cracked laminate that remains silky smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs. Try to find one much better with the word ‘MONO’ on it.

Corners: Minimal wear and solid with no fraying that many often suffer. The single thickness front often softens and break into layers before eroding, this has not happened on this one. A little creasing is evident but show little, all retain very fine shape, being sharp and well defined.

Cover Summary: I can reitterate enough just how fragile this cover is. This has only a few blemishes, the bottom edge being the most significant, but still only relatively minor in context. A few light surface marks to the 3D graphic but how many will exist with none these days? This has more than just survived those heady days of the psych-era 60s, this is a cover you can hold with pride and enjoy looking at. Most would consider this a keeper-copy in all respects – record, inner and cover – only the most discerning would want to upgrade this, and if so, at what cost? This should please many, if not most collectors, however any doubts…

The Inner: Worthy of an EX++ grading, as delicate an inner as you will ever find, similar to the ‘Pepper’ inner and just as fragile. Made from ultra thin paper, non-lined, this is rarely seen untorn or split. This has two small, neat rim splits which I have carefully repaired, so-much-so, they are barely even show and that is the honest truth. This is clean with full original rich colour retained, this inner is often seen with ringwear from the heavy record (in this case VERY heavy), that was still usually kept inside, not a wise practice as this will eventually get damaged or fully split but that was more apparent after it happened. The record now is kept inside a brand new polylined inner. This one shows no rubbing or any ink-loss. The three sealed edges are now that – sealed and very neat. The top opening edge is also neat with only minor light crease traces. The corners are crisp and unusually uncreased and what is so nice about this psych inner is the rich colour and lack of real wear. One that retains real freshness and still looks super to the eye with any creasing minimal and light and only mild crinkle, the least anyone could expect. With so many of these written-off or ultra tatty and ripped to pieces (or simply missing altogether), this is a very fine example that complements the cover perfectly.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Strictly EX(-) but it’s really much better than that. A copy with a modest few fine surface marks and odd minor surface blemish and hairlines but nothing that really resembles a ‘scratch’ proper and practically everything is ignored. This is a top quality Decca pressing, with very thick vinyl and deeper, wider grooves. The music information lies beneath these minor, non-penetrating blemishes and sound quality is very high indeed. An early pressed unboxed mono copy that has a lovely shine and is still intense black, I feel very sure this has not been played too many times. With so many seen covered with ugly deep scratches on washed out vinyl covered in grimy fingermarks and laden with dust, this copy is almost a breath of fresh air and such available copies are at a real premium these days. A copy that has avoided any needle drops or arm jolts or damage, this copy tracks effortlessly and perfectly and is very flat, these early pressings will not be easy to find much cleaner these days. Again if only an unmarked pristine visual record is wanted, wait for the near impossible.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record plays with astonishing sound that is quite unique. Very powerful, rich and detailed mono audio quality that gives a very different performance to the stereo version. Big and bold in dynamics and unique mix and production, both formats are essential. It has terrific genuine high fidelity sound, any audio blemishes are ultra mild as already mentioned in my preamble - I state this critically, most listeners will love this copy. I am, I hope, a discerning listener and careful grader (I have been told on several occasions I actually undergrade – but I can live with that). This record would please me to own, keep, and enjoy. The sound on this album is special and I found any minor blemishes were blown away by all the positives of which there are many. Even the quieter passages play well with little unwanted. The voices are recorded loud and forward and they rarely avoid clipping. Even the shouted voices at the start of side two are sharp and focused and not masked by crackle as many are. Just holding that vintage cover and hearing the in-built power of this vintage mono Decca record will please. Play this album loud - the music and sound demands it, and this copy can cope – treated carefully it will last indefintely if played on a modern lightweight deck. These grooves portray mininal wear and sound is mostly focused and sharp and importantly enjoyable. Like Beatles albums, this and other Stones albums are so often seen totally trashed and unplayable, hearing this fine copy is like a breath of fresh air compared to many. I will never state ‘pristine’ or ‘perfect’ but I feel exceptional and it’s a really challenging recording and I enjoyed it immensely. Remember, this record was not really issued to be played on high-end turntables with moving coil cartridges, but at home on a Dansette or similar single channel record player. With that in mind, this is a superb example and I feel again most fans and collectors will love it. It may only just fall a tad short for the absolute sound purist or connoisseur, but being realistic, this will take some beating.

End Piece: I hope I have not dragged this one out too much, but this is an important album - arguably one of the most difficult albums within the Rolling Stones catalgoue (if not ever). They don’t show up that often in fine playing conditions with lovely, little-worn covers and mostly intact neat inners. Being honest, the mono version is far, far harder to find in top conditions but it probably sold more at the time. Even the laughably under-valued price guides are now putting very large values on this and other early Stones albums, and prices are set to rise even higher and just have. Even with very minor visual blemishes, and even fewer audio ones, I would urge any Stones collectors who needs this elusive mono classic to think about this copy – apart from the perfectionists, few will be disappointed and I can strongly recommend it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment pote
