Label Conditions: All four in superb condition: supremely clean and highly attractive with only very light, few and faint spindle marks. With four ultra clean playing surfaces also, all evidence suggests one of the lighest played, earliest pressings of this evergreen classic I have seen for some considerable time.

Cat Number: COC 69100.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 152 / 132 grams. The first disc is almost a freak weight for this album and even the lower weight of the second record is above the average I have had previously. This popular set, issued in the year of the oil shortage crisis, was usually pressed on thin, lightweight vinyl and was never really the quality of their previous label Decca. Find this very early copy pressed on this weight of vinyl is very unusual indeed both records exceed any previous weights by some distance.

Rarity: I guess logic would say a fairly common album, it charted at one in the UK and US, and for sure it does show up reasonably often. But the early pressed copies included a strip of postcards depicting scenes from the ‘Fall From Exile on Main Street’ and they are not easily found now especially fully intact, complete and in little short of Mint condition. How many of these would have been separated, used and lost? This vintage copy includes all 12, all still se tenant with no perferation pulls, all in fantastic condition. With two heavy pressed, little played records that actually play supremely well inside a neat, little-worn cover with two unsplit inners, this Stones classic is getting hard to find as such.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Regarded by many as their greatest ever album, unlike previous ones, this rampaging double set offers a thicker sound mix and balance that has always been something of a mystery. Faster material, more up-tempo, laden with riffs this is a very uplifting and entertaining and does include some wonderful songs. ‘Exile’ offered a new sound and a new dirction which most fans loved, and most thought it works perfectly. All four sides play beautifully, devoid of irritating crackle, and never take this for granted on this album, many offer very disappointing sound, especially the very thin flimsy later pressings. For Stones fans needing this gem, well this one sets a very high standard and will not be beaten easily.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT (or very close to). A gatefold format, unlaminated cover with central storage and single thickness front. Printed and made in England by Shorewood. This includes a full set of se-tenant post cards, the two hard inners and two unlined paper inner sleeves.

Cover Front: I can hardly emphasise enough how wear- and damage-prone this cover is. Immensely difficult to find in solid and attractive condition. This front has withstood the test-of-time well, a little mild darkening on the extreme left edge and a little mild feathering and softening to the top edge, being single card this is very common on this one. A few very low level, gentle surface creases hardly even show and the odd minor light mark or two viewed up close. Overall, a nice looking front

Cover Back: The back is similar but overall even better. The most noteworthy blemish are lightish pressmarks towards the top central - the culprit is obvious - that zip from ‘Sticky Fingers’. The owner stored his albums chronologically and this rested against the famous metal zip. Being totally honest, I have rarely seen this cover that does not have such marks, at least these are light and have removed NO ink, hence they only really show with angled viewing. No ringmarks or rubbing to either outer faces and both look attractive to the eye.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, minor creasing and softening on the fragile spine ends but no splits to the central storage area which again is common.

Top Edges: Very light patchy rubbing on the thick back. As mentioned above the front single thickness edge has softened a little with very mild feathering.

Bottom Edges: A mild central friction rub only on the back, the front is crisp and very and both are in super shape with the least rubbing I have seen for ages.

Right Edge(s), and Type (the spine): A sealed edge where most records are stored, these are entered from the centre of the centrefold. This edge is the spine in affect as it has the title text etc which remains fully present and unworn. Little other wear up to the corners with any darkening mild. The delicate front edge is still very sharp as it falls almost flush to the back end.

Left Edge: The traditional spine edge, this has no text printed and has little wear up to the ends that have moderately rubbed, the top more so than the bottom.

Corners: The right corners are quite neat with any rubbing modest. The left pair have more with moderate rubbing.

Cover Summary: A very wear prone cover to say the least and this is still one of the better ones I have seen. Any ‘box-like’ cover is more prone to wear and damage that most other types. This strong item should please many collectors but not the perfectionists - but finding this ‘perfect’ is getting a near impossible task these days.

The Illustrated Cards: MINT(-), little short of as new and all still joined with no pulled perforations. Untorn, clean, no splits or creasing of any real note. Again these are seldom found like this and in most cases missing altogether or incomplete.

The Card Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT++ / MINT(-): one has a tiny tip crease but little else and all edges are unsplit with no repairs. These were never lined and both look superb.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT+ to (++). Often stored directly inside the hard inners which was never be kind to the playing surfaces, that’s why discerning collectors placed their records inside polylined inners. Both very clean, intense black and shiny with exceptional pressing weights, the first disc an almost unbelievable 152 grams. A near freak weight for this album. Very light and faint hairline surface marks seen under light and odd super-faint and small scuff traces being critical. I am certain they have been played very little and offer superb sound. Visually lovely records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early-press set play even above their high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive and I actually think these offered better detailed and more ‘open’ sound that others I have heard. I believe it’s the first A1/B1 matrix first disc I have ever had too. Played loud this has tremenous power and detail and is heard to best advantage. Unusually, barely any surface sounds and this is a very clean and impressive copy, especially the first disc, without doubt, my best ever. Clearly modestly handled and devoid of the often invisible (but audable) pressing sounds some seem to have. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this high class album, still considered a classic and one of the genuine all time greats by the vast majority. These records will prove very difficult to find better and most fans will enjoy them, this set merits strong recommendation and the cards themselves are getting harder and harder to find.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
