If Ron Elliott is "well-known" for anything, it's for playing lead guitar in the San Francisco pop-rock band, The Beau Brummels, and for writing or co-writing most of their most popular songs. His only solo album, The Candlestickmaker, is about as early-70's San Francisco-sounding as it gets, embodying the same sort of experimental West-Coast country-rock sound that the Grateful Dead was putting down around the same time. In fact, there are more than a few moments on this album that sound like Jerry Garcia must be lurking nearby.
I love the overall sound of the album. Most of the tracks feature at least three guitars, or even four, some acoustic, others electrified. Orchestration pops up here and there, and a jazz flute wanders in for a bit on "Lazy Day," but otherwise, the album is built upon those guitars and a dexterous rhythm section. Elliott's got a surprisingly good baritone, too. I love how he hits the low notes on "Deep River Runs Blue." Sal Valentino usually took the lead vocals on Beau Brummels recordings, but really, Elliott's not too shabby himself.
