RONALD REAGAN
SPEAKS OUT AGAINST SOCIALIZED MEDICINE
AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
M9MP 6427
LP
VG+

Reagan's first speech on a political topic (amazing how health care is still such a controversial matter 40 years later!) This album documents "Operation Coffee Cup" which was intended to kill the proposed Medicare bill being proposed in Congress in 1961. The American Medical Association wanted to keep their fixed prices and mounted a secret campaign to stop the bill. 3000 of these one sided records were made and distributed among the wives of the AMA (the AMA Auxiliary) with the hopes that they would flood Representatives with letters condemning (and ultimately stopping) the proposed King bill. As well as enlisting the help of the extremely adept speaker Ronald Reagan on record, the enclosed material was extensive and clearly spelled out to the women how to host a gathering and specifically what should be done after the event was over. It included a written letter from the Chairman of the Women's Auxiliary explaining what should be done as well as a list of Senators and Representatives and a how-to on addressing and writing the letters. Also included were a handful of "success reports" that asked the hosts to report on how many times the record was played, the size of the audience and the number of letters sent to Congress. In addition to all this material a booklet of the printed text of Reagan's recorded speech was included.
Operation CoffeeCup was a success and the King bill was defeated (although a slightly different version of the bill made it through a couple of years later). The issue of health care came up much later in Reagan's presidency campaign. The well kept secret of the existence (and therefore Reagan's involvement) of this record almost kept Reagan from being outed that he was ever against Medicare.

Vinyl is VG+ with only some minor sleeve marks to mention. It plays wonderfully with no distracting noises to note. Gatefold jacket is in nice shape with minimimal wear (a couple of dinged corners and maybe some overall slight yellowing. Please see photos).

All inserts are included! They are all in wonderful condition with only an indendation from the original paper clip that bound them to mention.

A great piece of American history that could not be more timely!
