It's a shame that this record doesn't get much attention these days. Ronnie Hawkins mixes gospel-tinged, hollerin' rock & roll with rock-a-billy to perfection. "Forty Days", "Ruby Baby", "Mary Lou", and "My Gal Is Red-Hot" are definitive. The rest is of similar quality, except for the strident "Horace". The music essentially sounds like the cover would have you think.

Well, here it is, in all its glory: one of the most majestic, glorious, frenetic rockabilly albums known to humankind, by none other than one of the founding fathers of Rock'n'Roll. This also happens to be our candidate for the best Rockabilly album ever recorded (well, alright, OK, maybe Johnny Burnette Rock'n'Roll trio’s album is slightly better).

·      THE RECORD

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(c)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ONLY ABOUT GOOD ++ (G++)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-       A visible water stain affects the area about 1/2 inch wide along the opening side; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible.

-       Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity.

-       Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Front cover has a peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than 1 square inch in size).

-       Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged  (just a beginning of the split seam)

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the top seam  (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the seams
