Rory Gallagher

'Live! In Europe'

Polydor, UK, 1972

2382 112

FROM HUMBLE beginnings as a showband journeyman, through years spent building his power trio Taste into one of the most exciting and formiddible blues units on the scene Rory Gallagher's in concert reputation was second to none. As a guitarist his style and delivery stretched from gentle accoustic folk to wild electric blues rock and all points inbetween.

Backed by drummer Wilger Campbell and perrenial bassist Gerry McAvoy Rory's third official live album (the previous two were released by Taste) was a statement of intent. Whereas Taste had often been accused of unnecessary free form improvision and endless jamming, Rory's solo work had been far more focussed. This album clearly reiterates that shift in focuss featuring seven cleverly chosen compositions that spotlights Rory's quest to manoeuvre his blues roots into a far more cohesive package.

Album opener 'Messin' With The Kid' is as strong a statement of intent as anything from the hands of Johnny Winter or Eric Clapton. Ditto 'I Could've Had Religion' a winding slow paced blues burner buffed with just the right amount of indulgence and never out staying its welcome. For harder edge Gallagher, then look no further than 'In Your Town' a rocket paced 12 bar shuffle with careful employment of atmosphere, dynamics and - amazingly -charm. Top dog though is the full-on power rock of 'Bullfrog Blues', one of Rory's best known live tracks and arguably the best version he ever recorded.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
