"MY DIARY” b/w “UTEE"
The ORIGINAL DEMO 7" 45 on REVIS RECORDS of Los Angeles, California DEMO issue # 1013 from 1965.
Here is a RARE vinyl gem from the earliest catalogue for James 'Jimi' Marshall Hendrix - considered the GREATEST EVER rock guitar player.
Jimi raised the bar for instrumental prowess, yet it was from an enigmatic learning, combined with INSTINCTUAL brilliance, that defies any equal before or since. He first jammed with his saxophone-playing Dad in Seattle, before crossing the Canadian border to play in 'The Blue Flames' combo (and playing with Tommy Chong, pre-Cheech and Chong, incidentally). He was unceremoniously fired off a tour with Little Richard, then hopped on with The Isleys, who were fond of the stage-roaming musician they called 'the creeper' (as Ron Isley told me himself). When Jimi was drafted into the paratroopers, he didn't forget to bring along his guitar - and it's told that he fell asleep playing it, waking with it still in his hands! Where imagination met dreamland - Jimi was playing his guitar.
With a love for r'n b and blues, he was particularly fond of Curtis Mayfield's style, and while touring with The Isley Brothers he was noted by Billy Revis - who wanted him to play on this recording session for his 'Revis' lable, behind young hopeful soul-stress Rosa Lee Brooks.
Maybe Arthur Lee was instrumental in getting this session together, but Rosa told me herself about the songwriting credit he claimed on 'My Diary', was somewhat presumptuous - I think she had at least as much to do with the writing of this song, and Hendrix in the construction of the instrumentation (as evidenced when playing this).
The intro is very reminiscent of 'Hey Joe' and 'Little Wing' - subtle, lilting, and defining for the style of the song - LOVELY work.
On the flip, Jimi takes off with a lot more artistic license!
The structure of the track is direct and powerful, in the mold of 'Come On Up', 'The In Crowd' and 'Shake and Fingerpop'. With more of a chunky workout, it would be perhaps more what Jimi was used to on a hot sweaty Isley Brothers stage! After a nice sharp chord intro the song (and everyone on it!) CUTS LOOSE! With grunting sax the only instrument staying on the beam, there's plenty of room for Jimi to have a little fun on those frets. Booty-shaking rhythm, and on a track that probably had more claim to be the top side, in my book. It's GREAT, and absolutely DEMANDS playing loud - this does REALLY 'shake and pop'!

Sadly though, this sank almost without trace from riding any chart waves - and remains an historic and highly sought-after disc for all Hendrix collectors, and it's high on most wants lists as an elusive 'sore thumb' that's never going to get soothed!
Try finding another copy!
This is from my own private collection, and happily I was able to see Rosa Lee Brooks sing and perform at The L.A. Coliseum at the 2004 African-American Fair - a wonderful exhibition that was memorable for great art, music, and 'the feelgood factor'!
I knew she was playing so I took along the 45, Rosa signed the label for me.

CONDITION
The VINYL here is VG++ to EX on 'My Diary' A quality player, with great shine too. 'Utee' has a couple of marks, but plays loud and clear without skips or severe crackle to disturb the sound, VG+.
LABLES are clean EX, no tears, light wear only, signed nicely in black ink by the lovely Rosa.
A true historic gem for any collector - I'd be amazed to see another (even behind a frame at the 'Hard Rock Cafe')
