ROSCOE MITCHELL OLD QUARTET ORIG 1975 FREE JAZZ LP
Artist:Roscoe Mitchell Title:Old Quartet Label:Nessa Year of release:1975 (recorded 1967) Catalog/Label number:N-5 stereo Condition of vinyl:VG++ to Mint- The glossy vinyl LP is very clean with a few light, hardly visible sleeve marks. The album plays flat on the turntable with no warps. Play grade:VG++ The entire album played well. No skips or clicks. Condition of record cover:VG++ Minor ring wear. No cuts, holes, tears, markings, creases or seam splits. Notes:From Brian Olewnick at allmusic: "Recorded in the year prior to his groundbreaking Congliptious but not released until 1975, Old Quartet captures the Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble (which would later coalesce into the Art Ensemble of Chicago) on a clear pathway toward the later album's majestic heights. In fact, it leads off with "Old," which closed the other album, and this performance is arguably superior both in its greater expansiveness and in Lester Bowie's incredibly poised trumpet work. That they slightly flub the ending (and joke about it) only adds to the relaxed air of the piece. "Quartet" is in two lengthy parts, and is a loose, somewhat rambling exploration that anticipates the title track from Congliptious less, perhaps, than it does Mitchell's quasi-narrative epic "The Spiritual" from two year later. The amount of freedom already at hand in 1967 is breathtaking, however. The group never meanders aimlessly; each little sound or moment of silence contributes to the flow. Vocal hums, whistles, harmonica tootles, and struck bells share equal footing with the more "traditional" instruments. Early on, Mitchell had realized that "free jazz" didn't only mean screaming at the top of one's lungs; there was room for quiet. The group would mature greatly over the next year, but all the seeds are clearly here. The album ends with a solo performance by Mitchell, augmenting his alto with bells, harmonica, and percussion. It's almost frightening how he's able to seesaw between delicate, music box-like melodies and the most harrowing slabs of sonic assault possible. As of 2002, Old Quartet was available on disc only as part of a wonderful limited-edition five-CD box set, The Art Ensemble 1967/68 on Nessa. While perhaps a small step below Congliptious, it is nonetheless a beautiful album in its own right and one that ranks very high in Roscoe Mitchell's discography." Musicians:Roscoe Mitchell; alto, soprano, clarinet and flute - Lester Bowie; trumpet and flugelhorn - Malachi Favors; bass - Phillip Wilson; drums Songs:OLD - QUARTET PART 1 - QUARTET PART ll - SOLO NO RESERVE!

Grading
MINT * Perfect record, clean gloss, no marks. A mint record is uncommon.
M- * Very clean only a few light marks; plays very well.
M- * Album cover - Near perfect with only minor signs of wear. There should be no ring wear.
VG++ * Surface marks, no scratches, should play and look very good with faint, if any, audible surface noise.
VG++ * Album cover - Some minor ring wear, but should be in good condition overall. Also, there can be some minor creases in the corners but no splits in seams.
VG+ * The record shows signs of use, but plays well despite quite visible surface marks and possibly some light scratches. This grading is often used for records which have not been cared for perfectly but still play well overall. A few very faint clicks may be allowed, and will be included in the description.
VG+ * Album cover - May have corners that may be slightly bent, but not broken. There may be wear to the seams but no tears or holes.
VG * Still a nice record, looks used, light scratches, no gouges, still plays fairly well. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music.
VG * Album cover - There may be seam splitting, but not complete separation of the sleeve panels from each other. There will be noticeable ring wear on the cover, but the cover should for the most part be in good condition.
