Not usually quoted amongst the best live albums in rock, this, Roxy's first live set sounds mighty impressive to me. Released at the end of their first phase, before Ferry's less than completely successful first attempt at a solo career and the group's hugely popular return to the arena in a slicker and smoother style, it offers a fine retrospective of their eclectic but electric early work.
Songs from four of the five preceding studio albums are present (leaving "Stranded" stranded on the shelf) and even if the tracks were recorded at different stages of the group's evolution, doubtless with different personnel (although notably there's no sign of banished dark angel Eno), there's a sense of cohesion binding these fine but very different tracks together into a strong live selection.
"Country Life" highlight "Out Of The Blue" is chosen to open proceedings with its double-stop drum-beat, reverberating bass and stratospheric violin work, even if the latter doesn't quite match the caterwauling frenzy of the studio take, followed, surprisingly by their non-album second single, bearing the best song-title ever in my opinion, the brilliant "Pyjamarama" (shame it was co-opted in the 80's for a stupid girl-group band-name), in a slowed-down, choppier version only let down by a weak finish.
Next up are the "look behind you!" mesmerising menace of "The Bogus Man", the vintage interlude of "Chance Meeting" and to close side one, the disco-tinged splendour of "Siren" highlight "Both Ends Burning" again let down slightly this time only by some screechy female backing singers.
The first two tracks on side two are a couple of the group's celebrated longer album cuts "If There Is Something" from their debut album, hypnotic and mildly unsettling, hinging on a plaintive violin solo before picking up again with the droning "When we were young" chant which next makes way for Ferry's ritual unbaring of what really goes on behind (certain) closed doors, "In Every Dream Home A Heartache", the song's sinister prelude erupting into the orgiastic coda, really mind-blowing, before the encore, an urgent, thrilling "Do The Strand" where you can choose your favourite Ferry outrageous rhyme, ("Incognito" and "Lido", "Cheap thrills" and "Quadrilles, "Nijinsky" and "Strandski") iconically ending abruptly without audience reaction, although we can easily guess at that.
The band is in fine form on all the tracks, with only perhaps Paul Thompson's occasionally over-heavy hitting on the drums slightly out of kilter. Ferry of course is the suave and svelte master of ceremonies, effortlessly accomplishing the feat without resorting (perish the thought!) to extraneous between-songs banter with the crowd.
A vivid picture then of one of the best bands of the early 70's, Viva Roxy, indeed.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).
(b) The record is apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.
(c) The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.
(a) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a small cutout saw-mark (an indent about 5-8 mm long ) on one of its seams.
- Cover has a slight "wavy" (curly) warp across both panels (front and back) (nothing significant); this will have absolutely no effect on the record.
- Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
