The late Roy Ayers Ubiquity laid down many musical blueprints in his career, and 1973 album Red Black & Green came when the iconic vibraphonist was journeying from jazz into funk and soul. Joined by Bernard Purdie, Edwin Birdsong and keyboardist Harry Whitaker for these sessions, Ayers explores grooves that are sophisticated yet remain deeply accessible. Arrangements from William S Fischer and contributions from Charles Tolliver and Sonny Fortune emphasise rhythm and texture over the usual spiritual jazz flourishes but still leave room for Ayers' vibraphone to shine. Covers like 'Ain't No Sunshine' and 'Day Dreaming' sit alongside originals such as 'Cocoa Butter' and the standout title track. A gold standard in melodic funk that has been out of print for years.
