Label Conditions: Both very clean and still fresh looking, but moderate, if fine spindle marks that only show under angled light. With two very clean playing surfaces and high quality sound with little unwanted, these spindle marks which are more numerous that I would normally like to see probably indicate hole to spindle searching rather than number of plays. This an opinion based on what I have in front of me, the record is very nice indeed and all other evidence suggests modest use.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Far harder to find as a first issue. Although this does not include the very elusive and quite rare insert, this is never an easy one to find without the EMI box on the labels, being one of the very last Harvest albums issued before it’s introduction.

Brief Info: For many fans of this great folk-rock artist, his best ever album, this title covers all aspects of what makes this man great – superb songs, expressive vocals and great guitar playing. Talking of guitars, the strange-named ‘guest’ guitarist on this work is no less than Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. The pseudonym had to be used for contractual reasons hence a well-kept secret for some time. This copy a very first pressing, and although the spindle marks (all fine) on the labels may indicate a fair degree of usage, I feel sure they exaggerate the truth – this is still a very fine copy and importantly, it plays very well throughout with little unwanted. I have heard this title several times that plays with crackle and unwanted sounds. The year of issue may give clues to the reasons why. The cover is one of Harvest’s most difficult: predominately black, unlaminated, a gatefold and textured, they hardly get more wear-prone than that. This offers only modest wear, mostly, and predictably on the storage edges, but not too much else with fine attractive front and back. Even the fragile spine retains all it’s text and that can never be guaranteed. As stated above, there is no insert with this one, and few will ever have it being one of Harvest’s most scarce extras. Still a solid and enjoyable all-round copy with lovely and mostly clean sound, many fans will enjoy it for sure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold with matt textured surfaces on the outside and smooth inside, this being made with quite soft card makes it extra vulnerable to just about anything time, bad storage and heavy handling can offer. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Apart from a fine and very light rub against the internal flipback construction edge near the top, this has little other wear at all which is unusual to say the least. Any other rubbing is very light indeed and the textured surface has barely any speckle (rubbing to the raised areas). A very small and minor wave trace near the bottom right corner and hardly a crease to be seen. Retaining impressive blackness, this very unforgiving front is still fresh and attractive, the lack of scuffs, price sticker issues and even surface marks makes this quite exceptional.

Cover Back: If anything, even better, the lack of ringwear is unusual to say the least and both sides retain a lovely blackness with no fading or lightening of the ink. Again, the textured surface has barely any traces of surface speckle or rubbing and the lack of creasing is almost remarkable. Very slight hints of burring and faint rubbing on the bottom edge, this being quite critical.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is smooth finished and has nothing of note to fault - both faces look marvellous and the strange artwork impressive.

Top Edges: Any rubbing very faint indeed, most of any present towards the right corners.

Bottom Edges: The front edge has little wear, the back has moderate rubbing from the centre to the right corner. Minus this, this cover would have been graded with an extra of plus.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering and both guaranteed untrimned. Record enters on this back edge that has faint traces of thickening if viewed end-on, but this again being somewhat critical. The front is closed and is very neat with just light burring near the very bottom.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, the edges meet up very close together and parallel. All text is nigh-on perfect and any wear to the surface is tiny and light up to the ends that have rubbed.

Corners: Moderate wear to all corners – all being black with soft card, few will ever avoid some wear. Fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Modest edge rubbing and fairly typical cornerwear, but the most important areas remain impressive, so this still attractive example should please many, and maybe even most collectors who will know just how difficult this one is.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): little real wear at all and only mildly aged by the usual darkening to the seam adhesive – here relatively modestly so. Few of these Harvest promotional lined inners escape this and here, little detracts from this solid and barely creased example. The lining still intact and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with two impressively clean playing surfaces, any surface marks are very few, tiny and faint as seen (just) under angled light. I state again, the spindle marks I feel do not tell the truth on this one – some owners used the labels as guide to locate the spindle to hole – fewer in those days actually thought it an issue. Being very fine, these hardly even show with normal viewing anyway. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful album plays up to and most-all exceeds it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are few and gentle and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is a much cleaner pressing than many I have heard for this title (as many first pressings often are). Few copies will outperform this early one significantly I feel sure, and remember I play all my records on an ultra revealing LP12 and Naim amplication. Predominately acoustic, thus few places for unwanted sounds to hide, this offers impressive and mostly noise-free sound, but light traces can rarely be avoided on albums like this. That said, it will take a fair amount of beating and little, if anything really spoilt my immense enjoyment hearing the genuine classic again. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played more modestly than the spindle marks may suggest. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
