The Roy Harris Third String Quartet No. 3 (“Four Preludes and Fugues”) from 1939 was recorded on June 13, 1940 and January 6, 1941 and is one of the first string quartets by an American composer ever recorded. Harris’ quartet is unique in its construction, being a series of 8 relatively short “movement-like” preludes and fugues grouped into 4 pairs; hence, the subtitle. Roth String Quartet excels here in this work that it premiere on Sept. 11, 1939. A distinct bonus on this super-desirable 78 set is the program notes pasted inside the front cover of the binder, written by the sui generis Nicolas Slonimsky, that witty and all-knowledgeable musicologist (1894-1995), editor of the indispensable “Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians”; his notes are anecdotal and insightful. (The notes were apparently deleted for a later 1940s re-issue of the set.) This set will be a major source of pride in any 78-collector’s bounty.

CONDITION of DISCS: NM- (almost unseen perfect condition; clean and scratch-free)

CONDITION of BINDER: VG++ (the sleeves holding the 4 discs are strong and unsplit along the bottom (a common occurrence in 78s sleeves); someone’s name (Algren?) is scribbled in pen on the upper-left corner, but the fabric spine is nearly flawless, showing no evidence of the set being grabbed by the top and pulled off of a shelf. The spine’s silver lettering is a bit dulled but is still quite readable. There is only a bit of shelf-wear on the edges.
