ROY ORBISON Crying ORIG UK PLUM LONDON GROOVED Decca Press 1A/1A B1/U1 stampers
Roy Orbison, Crying (titled as "Cryin" to record labels).
Original 1962 UK London mono LP, HA-U 2437.
Very early press with Decca grooved plum and silver labels, 1A/1A matrix suffixes and B1/U1 mothers/stampers. Decca utilised the "BUCKINGHAM" system, so B and U represent a very early pressing.
Not mint but a very acceptable pressing. Spider trail marks around the spindle areas indicates some plays, but not excessively so. There is no whitening or wearing down of the centre areas and the labels still have a clean and undefaced lustre.
Playing surfaces are still very glossy. A fair but certainly not excessive number of light hairline marks and scuffs. None of these heavy and these are isolated marks on an otherwise clean surface. On the whole visually a solid VG plus.
Playback is a solid VG. Some light crackle, more so at the beginnings of the sides and band separators, but none of this overly obtrusive and much of the LP plays very cleanly and without any background noise. There are no ticks or clicks.
Poly-lined inner sleeve is orginal and complete, but somewhat tatty and with a few closed tears.
External sleeve VG minus. Beginning to get a little worn and tired looking, but with no loss or serious defects. No tears. Laminated front panel is clean but with a number of light pinch line creases leading in from edge areas, laminate half moons and some laminate air pocketing. No loss of laminate however.
Note that laminated black sleeves do not photograph well, and appearance is VERY MUCH better than photo suggests, as light tends to bounce from all the imperfections and laminate air pockets. In reality, these are only visible at certain angles.
Predominantly white rear panel of sleeve is quite heavily darkened from age, handling etc., with this being more predominant towards the edges. A couple of small and neat red pen lines next to two of the song titles, else free of inscriptions, stickers etc.
No seam splits or edge scuffing, although a few hairline creases through the spine area, which have taken on browning. Entry side still acceptably firm, although starting to become gently softened and with one small closed tear.
