Label/Format: London (Monument) pressed by Decca in England. These have matt very gently textured surfaces with the deep ring ridge. This a very first deep maroon (known as Plum) format first pressing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and light, fine and generally faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: HAU 8207.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A typical solid weight from Decca.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, but rare in this condition. The record is outstanding for a 50-year-old mono and the cover is little short of immaculate. The owner of this really looked after all elements of this superb set.

Brief Info: Looking at this incredible copy, you have little idea just how old this record really is. Both record, cover, and even the inner sleeve – which has a 1964 date-code, are amazing. This as well on arguably Orbison’s ever album. Featuring the classic title track plus ‘It’s Over’ and ‘Dream Baby’ amongst other greats, this is The Big O at his ultimate best. My play-grade was a incredible experience. That incredible vocal is still fully encaptured on this fantastic Decca-pressed mono record. At times the sound of his voice goes beyond the call-of-duty for a vintage disc to reproduce, but this one still does it nigh-on perfectly. The range and intensity is breathtaking, and only the least used, and certainly not abused copies will ever handle this. This is a phenomenal recording, forget the age, the man actually sounds in the room. To keep all that detail and fidelity intact all these years is almost remarkable. I can almost guarantee: most of these will have distortion, break-up and loss of clarity, but this remains intact and was a pure joy to hear. With almost a dream cover as well, this will prove a near ultimate upgrade for any ‘Big O’ collector. The odd tiny blemish aside, this copy looks almost out-of-the-shop. So bring back those 1960s memories flooding back with ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’, from a copy that does more than justice to this great singer’s memory.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via the flat spine and two top and bottom flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original polylined inner sleeve, also in fabulous condition.

Lamination & Front: ‘Age-defying’ hardly covers this one. An absolute classic piece of 1960s pop history on a gorgeous album cover. Blemishes?, well at this age it will be near impossible not to have. A tiny mark near the top edge the odd very gentle surface crease and a small half moon. Only a small few ultra fine and faint edge hairlines that register little. The Clarifoil retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting with hardly any dulling either, even under light. Barely aged with no fading, any bowing minimal, for which this laminate often causes. Just look at my close-up portrait picture of the man – this is 100% as taken with NO enhancements or camera trickery. Try finding this front better.

Cover Back: Truly exceptional and barely aged at all. The white, thin card still very white with any discolouration or grubbiness minuscule. Barely creased and any rim impression negligible. Both flipbacks are equally superb, solid, very white with no burring to the ends or grime lines. They hardly get better.

Top Edge: Unworn, quite straight with a super-smooth, unscuffed surface.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Again exceptional: solid, quite straight with minimal compression, the ends pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, not yellowing, fading or toning.

Corners: Four amazing corners which have avoided any knocks or dinks. All retain fantastic shape with not rubbing with any creasing tiny and faint.

Cover Summary: A truly gorgeous piece of pop music history – a fabulous all-round example of this vintage 1960’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. Even this Decca-style polylined inner has class. A purely ‘mono’ inner which no reference to stereo records. Only marked down from practically mint for natural and consistent discolouration of the paper. Barely creased with two immaculate window circles and clear lining that has just one light scuff. No edge splits or repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text and made in England. Importantly, it has the 10/4 date-code being October 1964, so there is no doubting the vintage of this record, not that I had any doubts anyway with all the above criteria.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a beautiful visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with very few plays on all the evidence, and appearing with great care with a better record player of the time. Just a gentle light surface scuff on side two with NO sound and little else, even viewed under light. A remarkable 50+ mono record that almost sets the standards I would have judge others. We all know the states these vintage mono records are seen in these days, this one on the other side of the vinyl spectrum. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This mid-60s pop classic plays up to and most-all beyond it’s high visual grading with very little, if indeed anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high, and the vocals immense with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Keeping that vocal as intact as this is a major achievement really, when you consider what this could have been played on. This recording will really test any hi-fi system to its limit, I hardly knew myself just how powerful this man could sing, it will be a case of if your system can handle it. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been expertly stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A must-have for ‘Big O’ fans, and like the cover, a potential upgrade. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
