Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a couple of three ultra fine and faint spindle traces each side, this record appears hardly played, reiterated by superb sound throughout.

Brief Info: The ultimate solo album from one of rocks most talented musicians. Wood composes, sings and plays almost everything within this brilliant Harvest album. A very mixed bag in material with all styles covered. Formerly of The Move and ELO, Wood has many strings to his bow and seems to be able to play anything. Beautifully packaged too and this copy does it near full justice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better still. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt and full texturing on all surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clearly a challenging front with so much white. This is impressive with any discolouration or grubbiness minimal, gentle and very light. Still fresh looking with barely a crease to be seen. The lack of rubbing to the unforgiving surface is so unusual to find, also no sticker issues. This front sets a very high standard.

Cover Back: One of the most dramatic poses ever put on a cover – Wood means business with his cello here. A work of photographic art and looking superb on this hardly worn back. A fine rim impression near the top edge that is rarely avoided at best, that has hardly any rubbing to the critical black artwork areas.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both inner faces are practically as-made.

Top Edges: Both very straight, flush and clean, again not seen often like this.

Bottom Edges: The front edge is nigh-on perfect. The back one has a little, mostly fine, patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening or burring light and small. Record enters on the back edge, the front being closed, all guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight with no real compression, only a gentle tilt to left. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn as seen, the white surface with minimal hint of any discolouration, the folds also avoiding wear as well.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint and most retain excellent or better shape with no bashes.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this clearly wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. With extremes in white and black, and textured, these are rarely found so clean, one to please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white, unlined inner that has just light traces of darkening. There is little else to fault.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A lovely visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and solidly pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces tiny, few and faint as seen right up close under bright light. Visually a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Harvest gem plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Devoid of any noteworthy surface sounds, this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. A host of different instruments are featured and all are focused, sharp and precise with no pressing sounds, distortion or tracking issues*. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Both cover and record will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
