Emma Ruth Rundle's 2021 album Engine Of Hell was piano and voice, almost entirely stripped back. These Killing Times is the converse, hearing the Portland singer and guitarist return to full band form for a gothic, grungegaze expansion. Shot through with anti-patriarchal rage, the record snarks the rise of Christian nationalism and its sway over current political discourse - her charge is that anger, routed through craft and collaboration, holds longer than despair. Teaming with MBV and These New Puritans producer familias Sonny Diperri, lead single 'Powerless' was originally titled 'Noam Chomsky Is Dead To Me', in response to his Epstein connections. While Rundle's once favourite anarcho-syndical lingust may now be a sullied idol, she moves on to 'Don't Delay Heaven' and 'Human Kindness', emerging at the other end with a sense of through-hell optimism.
