In 1982, Canadian rock and roll legends Rush released their ninth studio album, and titled it 'Signals'. It was a bit of a departure for Rush, using maybe more synthesizers than ever before. It's not that they became a synth-pop band or anything, it's just that they merged different (more modern) sounds together with their traditional hard rock style. And it worked!
One of the singles released from 'Signals' is a song called "Countdown". It's about the Space Shuttle 'Columbia', which had its first launch in 1981. Rush wrote a song about it, and uses the actual astronaut's voices on the song (Robert Crippen and John Young) as well as their communications with ground control. This song, as printed in the liner notes of the 'Signals' album, is "Dedicated with thanks to astronauts Young & Crippen and all the people of NASA for their inspiration and cooperation."
"Countdown" was never a huge hit for Rush, but for millions of us, it holds s special place in out hearts. Check out the video, it's many live clips of that lauch, and shots of the aircraft itself. In 1982, Rush and Mercury released a limited edition shaped picture disc, and it's a great pic of the 'Columbia'! The track "Countdown" is on the A side, and the B side is the song "New World Man", the biggest hit from 'Signals', with the red fire hydrant. An extremely rare and scarce (and very cool) Rush collectible from the 80s!
There's only a few light surface marks on it that I can see. I can't vouch for the sound quality as I never play specialty vinyl, such as pic discs or colored records. The clear vinyl around this piece is starting to oxidize just a tiny bit. I've seen a couple that were perfectly clear, with others that were a deep rusty color. And some are so bad, you can't even tell what it is. I think it's because they used inferior materials when they made these. And pic discs, especially shaped ones, from the 70s and 80s almost always have plenty of surface noise on them.
This may not be around for long, so if your interested, grab it before it's gone, and the 'Columbia' heads for the heavens once again! Rush fans love their merch and collectibles, and I should know, I'm one of them. We will always love the legacy of great Rush music left to us by Neil, Alex, and Geddy. Canada's own...Rush!
